Configure File Sharing on Windows Server


a. Set Up File Sharing:
1. Open Server Manager:
o Click on the Server Manager icon from the taskbar or Start menu.
2. Add the File and Storage Services Role (if not already installed):
o In Server Manager, click on Manage > Add Roles and Features.
o Follow the wizard to add the File and Storage Services role.
3. Create a Shared Folder:
o Open File Explorer and navigate to the location where you want
to create the shared folder.
o Right-click in the directory and select New > Folder to create a
new folder.
4. Share the Folder:
o Right-click the folder you want to share and select Properties.
o Go to the Sharing tab.
o Click Advanced Sharing....
o Check the box labeled Share this folder.
o Optionally, you can click on Permissions to configure which users
or groups can access the folder and their permissions (Read,
Change, Full Control).
5. Apply and Confirm:
o Click Apply and then OK to close the dialogs.

2. Access the Shared Folder


a. From a Windows Client Computer:
1. Open File Explorer:
o Open File Explorer from the taskbar or Start menu.
2. Access Network:
o Click on Network in the navigation pane on the left.
3. Find the Server:
o Look for the server name under the Network section.
o Double-click the server name to see the list of shared folders.
4. Access the Shared Folder:
o Click on the shared folder to access its contents. If prompted,
enter credentials with permission to access the folder.
3. Manage Permissions and Security
a. Set NTFS Permissions:
1. Right-click the Folder:
o Right-click the shared folder and select Properties.
2. Go to the Security Tab:
o Click the Security tab to set NTFS permissions.
3. Edit Permissions:
o Click Edit to modify permissions for users and groups. Set
permissions for read, write, and execute as needed.
b. Set Share Permissions:
1. Go to Sharing Tab:
o In the folder’s Properties dialog, go to the Sharing tab.
2. Advanced Sharing:
o Click on Advanced Sharing... and then Permissions to set share-
specific permissions.
4. Map a Network Drive (Optional)
1. Open File Explorer:
o Open File Explorer.
2. Map Network Drive:
o Click on This PC and then on Map network drive in the ribbon.
3. Specify Drive Letter and Folder Path:
o Choose a drive letter and enter the network path of the shared
folder (e.g., \\ServerName\SharedFolder).
4. Finish:
o Click Finish to map the network drive and access it easily from
This PC.
By following these steps, you can efficiently share and manage files on a Windows Server within
a local network.
