 What is NETFLIX?
- Netflix, Inc. is an American media-services provider and production company

 How it started?
- founded in 1997 by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in Scotts Valley, California
- the company began streaming online videos in 2007

 1997 – Netflix launches the subscription service, offering unlimited rentals for one
low monthly subscription.

 2007 – Netflix introduces streaming, which allows member to instantly watch


television shows and movies on their personal computers.

 2009 – Netflix partners with consumer electronics companies to stream on the PS3,
internet connected TVs and other internet connected devices.
- 1 year earlier they had also partnered with Xbox 360. Blu-ray disc players, TV
set-top boxes and the Apple Macintosh.

 2010 – Netflix is available on the Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch, the Nintendo
Wii, and other Internet connected devices.

 2012 – Netflix surpasses 30 million members globally.


- The company wins first Primetime Emmy Engineering Award.
- Netflix now launches in the United Kingdom, Ireland and the Nordics.

 2013 – Netflix original series House of Cards launches.


- Netflix now has over 40 million members globally.

 Netflix SWOT analysis – Strengths : subsribers, the value of the brand, unique value
proposition, size of content library
- Weaknesses : Virtuous cycle might end, dvd segments,
price-aware consumers
- Opportunities : International markets, Original content,
secural forces
- Threats : content prices, competitive environment

 How does Netflix work?


Cost – Free trial option (1month)
- subscription £5.99 per month
- It will cost Netflix 4pence to deliver one SD movie online and 5pence for one
HD movie
Technology - Application Programming Interface (API) allows Netflix to be
accessed through modern technology
- Recommendation Algorithm – determines which movies costumer
may enjoy
- Has begun streaming House of Cards in Ultra HD 4k, recommended
bandwith of 20Mbps and to stream in 16Mbps

Streaming – Virgin media teams up with rival Netflix to offer more TVseries and
movies, this enabled the Netflix channel on Virgin media for instant access.
- Example – Xbox 360 average encoding rate is 2000 KBPS, a 2 hour
movie would equal 1.8GB
- HD movies – average encoding bit-rate is 3200 KBPS

Potentional problems – Higher quality videos may cause buffering delays which will
effect the download speed
- Different regions may have internet problems
- Frequent stops in the movie due to download problems
- Lack of quality on SD and HD movies
- Heavily reliant on internet, no backup if the internet goes down

Internet TV is replacing linear TV
