Part D – Application [APP – 12 marks]

1. A softball pitcher winds up and spins her arm around before releasing the ball. The pitcher’s shoulders are
1.35 m tall and arm is 0.36 m long. The pitcher can spin her arm 15 revolutions every 2 seconds and at t = 0 her
hand is it its maximum height.

a) Determine a sinusoidal equation to represent the height of the pitcher's hand. ✓✓✓

15 revolutions in 2 seconds
= 1 revolution in 2/15 seconds
P = 2/15
2𝜋
𝑘=
2 ∕ 15
𝑘 = 15𝜋

ℎ(𝑡) = 0.36 𝑐𝑜𝑠(15𝜋𝑡) + 1.35 (This is just 1 possible solution)

b) Determine the height of the pitcher's hand at t = 0.1 seconds. ✓✓

ℎ(0.1) = 0.36 𝑐𝑜𝑠(15𝜋(0.1)) + 1.35

ℎ(0.1) = 1.35 𝑚

Therefore, the height of the pitcher’s hand at t = 0.1 seconds is 1.35 m.

Page 6 of 7
c) Determine whether the instantaneous rate of change of the height of her hand is positive, negative or zero at
t = 0.1 ✓✓✓

ℎ(0.1) = 1.35

ℎ(0.101) = 1.366958

1.366958 − 1.35
𝐼𝑅𝑂𝐶 =
0.101 − 0.1

= 16.96 𝑚/𝑠

Therefore, the rate of change of the height of the pitcher’s hand at t = 0.1 seconds is positive.

2. The tides at Cape Capstan, New Brunswick, change the depth of the water in the harbour. On one day in
October, the tides have a high point of approx. 10 m at 2 p.m. and a low point of approx. 1.2 m at 8:15 p.m. A
particular sailboat has a draft of 2 m (this means that it can only move in water that is at least 2 m deep). The
captain of the sailboat plans to exit the harbour at 6:30 p.m. Can the captain exit the harbour safely in the
sailboat at 6:30 p.m.? ✓✓✓✓
10−1.2 10+1.2
𝑎= = 4.4 𝐶= = 5.6
2 2

Maximum to minimum height took 6.25 hours. This is half the period.

25
The period is 12.5 or hours.
2

25 2𝜋
=
2 𝑘
4𝜋
𝑘=
25
4𝜋
ℎ(𝑡) = 4.4 𝑐𝑜𝑠 ( 𝑡) + 5.6
25

ℎ(4.5) = 2.8 𝑚

Therefore, the captain can safely exit the harbour because at 6:30 PM, the height was greater than 2 m.
