Exercise 14B
1.
a.

Steps to be followed
Step 1: First draw one face of the cuboid measuring 4 cm and 6 cm.
Step 2: In further position behind, draw the opposite face such that distance between them is
5 cm.
Step 3: Use straight lines to join the corresponding vertices on the two faces together.
Step 4: Use dotted lines to represent lines on the original solid that cannot be seen from this
angle.

b. Step 1: Draw a triangle with one of the sides as the base. If the triangle is
equilateral, any side could be the base, or else the longest side may be
preferably be taken to be the base.
Step 2: From the base BC, drop perpendiculars from B and C as per the
required vertical length of the prism and mark the end points as D and E,
respectively.
Step 3: Join DE.
Step 4: This is the required prism.
Step5: Drop a dotted line parallel to to BD or CE from A having the same length as BD. Let
this line segment be AF.
Step 6: Join F to D and E with dotted lines.
Now, the five faces, six vertices and nine edges can be seen.
c.
Step 1: First, draw a rhombus ABCD with each side equal to
the given length of the base square, say, 5 cm.
Step 2: Take a point ‘P’ vertically above the meeting point of
the diagonals (i.e., O) of the rhombus. PO should be
perpendicular to ABCD.
Step 3: Join PA, PB, and PC with the lines from P to A, B, C
respectively.
Step 4: Join PD with a dotted line.
Step 5: Rub off AD and DC and make them dotted lines as they cannot be seen (they are
hidden sides).

2.

3. To be done by students.
4.
a. A cone over a cuboid
b. A cone over a cylinder
c. A cylinder on another cylinder with different base radius.

Exercise 14 C
1. Euler’s formula states that in any polyhedron,
Faces + Vertices − Edges = 2
2. According to Euler’s Formula : Faces + vertices − edges = 2
a. A cuboid has 6 faces, 8 vertices and 12 edges.
So, (14 + 12) − 12 = 2
Hence proved.
b. A triangular prism has 5 faces, 6 vertices and 9 edges.
So, (5 + 6) − 9 = 2
Hence proved.
c. A hexahedron has 6 faces, 12 edges and 8 vertices.
So, (6 + 8) − 12 = 2
Hence proved.
d. A square pyramid has 5 faces, 8 edges and 5 vertices.
So, (5 + 5) − 8 = 2
Hence proved.

Chapter Check−Up
1. All sides in a cube are equal
Correct option: c.

2. According to Euler’s Formula : Faces + vertices − edges = 2

5 + 5 − 𝐸𝐸 = 2
𝐸𝐸 = 8
Correct option: a.
3.
4. Student’s work
5.
S. Polyhedron Faces (F) Vertices (e) Edges (E) (F + V) − E
No
a. Hexagonal Prism 8 12 18 (8 + 12) − 18 = 2
b. Triangular 4 4 6 (4 + 4) − 6 = 2
Pyramid
c. Square Pyramid 5 5 8 (5 + 5) − 8 = 2
d. Octahedron 8 6 12 8 + 6) − 12 = 2
e. Nested Solid 9 9 16 9 + 9) − 16 = 2

6. Euler’s Formula : Faces + vertices − edges = 2

Faces 6 5 20 14
Vertices 𝑥𝑥 𝑦𝑦 36 𝑤𝑤
Edges 12 9 𝑧𝑧 36
Missing value 𝑥𝑥 = 12 + 2 − 6 𝑦𝑦 = 9 + 2 − 5 𝑧𝑧 = 20 + 36 − 2 𝑤𝑤 = 2 + 36 − 14
=8 =6 = 54 = 24

7.
a. iii. 4
b. i. 6
c. No, because in a dice the sum of numbers marked opposite should be 7.
