Nowadays, Peer Pressure and Financial Stability has a significant effect in choosing career
courses for a student. This can influence the students' choices in terms of decision making . Through this,
many students were struggling due to these factors. However, it is necessary to consider that the
influence of peer pressure and financial stability may depend on family background, allurement, and
values.
Choosing a career is a crucial stage in students' lives, requiring them to make wise decisions for
their future. Several factors influence students' career choices, with peer pressure and financial stability
being particularly significant. According to Decano et al. (2022), students often rely heavily on their
friends, which can impact their career decision-making. Additionally, students with limited financial
resources are often forced to prioritize financial stability over pursuing their personal interests, which
restricts their career choices (Johnson et al., 2024). These studies highlight that peer pressure and
financial stability are key factors influencing students' career choices.
However, in 2017, the unemployed Filipinos numbered about 2.4 million resulting in an annual
unemployment rate of 5.7 percent. Of this number, 76.1 percent belonged to the age group 15 to 34
years. Those in the age group 15 to 24 years comprised 46.7 percent and those in the age group 25 to
34 years, 29.4 percent (Bersales, 2017). Misfit graduates are one of the reasons considered on the
reasons why the countries experience high unemployment, and underemployment rate ( Pascual, 2014).
On the same year where unemployment was reportedly 5.7 percent high by the Philippine
Statistics Authority (PSA), the congress approved the promulgation of Republic Act No. 10931 also known
as access to free quality tertiary education act of 2017 in state universities and local universities and
colleges.Thru this mandation, the Filipinos will be able to attain their rights to access tuition-free tertiary
education that would help students especially in the marginalized, low socio economic sectors, and those
who were not
able to afford attending colleges to obtain their degree.
In addition, many students in Balayan are influenced by various factors when making career
choices. Some are guided by the people around them, such as family, friends, and teachers, whose
opinions and expectations can significantly affect their decisions. Others, however, face financial
challenges that complicate their decision-making. These factors impact whether they choose to pursue
their passions or prioritize financial stability.
The research gap concerning peer pressure and financial stability as factors affecting students'
career choices is significant as influential factors on students' career decisions. Numerous studies have
highlighted the pivotal role of peer influence in shaping adolescents' career preferences, pointing out that
students frequently base their career choices on the guidance and support of their peers. Nevertheless,
the extent of financial stability's effect on these decisions has not been thoroughly investigated. Although
existing research provides information on socioeconomic obstacles that may impede career progress by
impacting students' perceptions of their career options, the relationship between peer pressure and
financial considerations remains inadequately explored. Moreover, the impact of one's family background
and societal norms adds complexity to the decision-making process. This underscores the necessity for
in-depth research that considers the interplay between peer influence and financial security in determining
students' career paths. By doing so, this research can address a significant gap in the current body of
literature.
