Letters of Recommendation

A letter of recommendation is a letter, memorandum, or online form in which a writer (usually

someone in such a supervisory position) evaluates an individual's skills, work habits, and
achievements in preparation for a job, graduate school admittance, or other professional
position. Also considered as a reference letter. Its purpose is to give a prospective employer
pertinent information about the applicant’s qualifications, character, and general conduct. It
should be a straight forward, specific evaluation or appraisal of the applicant. The nature of its
content depends largely upon the relationship involved and upon the kind of information
sought by the prospective employer.
If the prospective employer asks specific questions, the letter of recommendation should
address the length of employment, the level of the employee's competency or efficiency, and
any other relevant traits that the previous employer was able to notice. On the other hand, if
the questions are broad in scope, the responses will be broad in scope as well.

3 Types of Recommendation Letters

1. Academic recommendation letters.

Academic recommendation letters are typically required to be submitted by students during the
admission processes of graduate and undergraduate schools. Generally, each prospective
student is requested to submit up to three references, which can be written by any education
professional familiar with the candidate’s academic background.

Academic reference letters include:

 Recommendation letter for undergraduate/graduate school

 Recommendation letter for a scholarship
 Recommendation letter for a fellowship program

To Whom This May Concern,

I, Ma. Kristine Dimple Pantoliaga, writing this letter to express my support for Ms. Marycris
Cabyao and her application for this scholarship program. I have had the pleasure of teaching
Miss Cabyao at Western Leyte College of Ormoc for the last 2 years.

During my relationship with Miss Cabyao I have experienced an individual who shows up earlier
than asked, works hard, and carries themselves in a polite, respectable manner. In addition,
Miss Cabyao is exceptionally gifted at making others feel comfortable and always maintaining a
positive attitude. It is without reservation that I recommend Miss Marycris Cabyao as a
candidate for this scholarship.
If you have any questions or requests do not hesitate to contact me.

Best,
Ma. Kristine Dimple Pantoliaga

2. Employment recommendation letters.

This type makes up the most popular type of recommendation letter. Sometimes, employers
can ask you to submit up to 3 recommendation letters as part of your job application. More
often, though, a recruiter might ask you for recommendation letters if they already like your
resume and want to learn more about you. Employment recommendation letters are written
by former - or current - coworkers, employers, or supervisors. If you can choose, pick someone
with more years of experience than you. After all, the more senior they are, the more weight
their recommendation carries.

Employment recommendations include:

 Recommendation letter for a coworker

 Recommendation letter for a (former) employee

Miss Beltran was a student of our school August 19, 2017 to March 19, 2021. She graduated
with honors, and won the admiration of her instructors.
She is ambitious, intelligent, reliable, and very capable. During her senior year at school, from
June 19, 2015 to March 19, 2017, she was employed in my office as part-time general clerk,
stenographer, and typist. To my entire satisfaction, besides being a most efficient worker of
unusual mental and social qualities, she proved herself to be a young woman of high character
and honor, tireless and unselfish in the execution of her employer’s interests, trustworthy in
her work and judgement. Always tactful, able, and sympathetic. For accuracy in the taking of
stenographic notes and for excellence in the transcription of letters, I have had no one in my
office who has been able to measure up to the high standard which she always maintained. I
could not keep her permanently in my office because her opportunity for advancement is
limited.
I am confident of her ability and resourcefulness to give you efficient service, and I am pleased
to recommend her unqualifiedly.

Sincerely yours,
Ma. Kristine Dimple Pantoliaga

3. Character recommendation letters.

Character recommendation letters, also known as personal references, are used to describe an
individual’s personality by someone who knows them well, including close friends, coworkers,
or employers. Personal references serve many purposes, the primary ones being court cases
dealing with criminal issues such as drunk driving offenses, or legal situations such as child
adoption procedures. It is not uncommon, however, to have a potential landlord or even
immigration officials ask for a personal reference.

Personal references include:

 Recommendation letter for a friend

 Recommendation letter for a tenant
 Recommendation letter for a patient

My name is Kristine Pantoliaga and proud to offer my recommendation of Ms. Jennie Kim to
whom I have personally known for 3 years as my friend.
During my relationship with Miss Kim I have experienced an individual who shows up earlier
than asked, works hard, and carries themselves in a polite, respectable manner. In
addition, Miss Kim is a family-person who has always presented themselves with
levelheadedness and grace.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you should require any further information.

Effective Business Correspondence

The affordable effect of the letter. If for any reason the writer feels honestly that a man was not
a success. It may have been his fault, and it may not have been in justice to that man, the writer
should either leave out any reference to the failure or mention the shortcomings in such a way
that the applicant’s chance for advancement somewhere else will not be injured. Just because a
man has not made good in one firm is no proof that he will not do so in another.
Because of their general nature and the ease with which they may be obtained, “To Whom It
May Concern” letters of recommendation are regarded by most employers as of little value.
They are vague, general, and highly impersonal. They should be avoided except in those cases
where it is practically impossible to secure the specific name of the addresses. To make a letter
of recommendation effective, it should be addressed specificallyt to the intended recipient.
Paragraph Contents:
1. Brief statement of subject and purpose of letter.
2. Summary of person’s history of employment, qualification, etc.
3. Candid statement of writer’s personal judgement of applicant’s qualification and
probable fitness for the position.
4. Final recommendation of the writer.
