Quarter 1 – Module 4:
Collective Action for the
Environment
Introductory Message
For the facilitator:
As a facilitator, you are expected to orient the learners on how to
use this module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress
while allowing them to manage their own learning at home.
Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the learners as
they do the tasks included in the module.

For the learner:

As a learner, you must learn to become responsible of your own
learning. Take time to read, understand, and perform the different
activities in the module.
As you go through the different activities of this module be
reminded of the following:
1. Use the module with care. Do not put unnecessary mark/s on any
part of the module. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the
exercises.
2. Don’t forget to answer Let Us Try before moving on to the other
activities.
3. Read the instructions carefully before doing each task.
4. Observe honesty and integrity in doing the tasks and checking
your answers.
5. Finish the task at hand before proceeding to the next.
6. Return this module to your teacher/facilitator once you are done.
If you encounter any difficulty in answering the tasks in this
module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher or facilitator. Always
bear in mind that you are not alone. We hope that through this material,
you will experience meaningful learning and gain deep understanding
of the relevant competencies. You can do it!

ii
Let Us Learn
Before we start, I would like to know how far you know about the basic
things regarding collective action for the environment. Specifically, this
module seeks to achieve the learning competency which is to participate in
implementing an environmental project such as building and maintaining a
school garden or conducting a war on waste campaign (depends on feasibility)
H9CE-Ig-h-14.

Moreover, we will focus our learning objectives with the following:

1. identify the practices that you’ve done both in school and in your own
household which helped in preservation of the environment;
2. classify different environmental programs into suitable categories; and
3. value the importance of working together to solve environmental
problems in the community.

Are you ready? Let’s do this. Now, let us start learning about this
module. See you and good luck!

High Five!

Materials: Short Bond Paper, Pen, Coloring Materials

Instruction: Trace your one hand on the paper. At the center of the palm
area, write Environmental Preservation. On the five fingers, write 5 practices
that you do in school or in your household to take care and preserve the
environment. Color your work.

Let Us Study

Environmental pollution is one of the key problems faced in our modern

world. Plastic has become one of the environment's biggest adversaries (Rajan,
2018). Moreover, Plastic has become one of the environment's biggest
adversaries. in little more than half a century, we have produced 9 billion tons
of it globally. And though we have a growing awareness of how it is choking
our streets and rivers, smothering and strangling marine life, and even ending
up in our food, it is more global than ever (Osborne, 2018). These problems
call for a collective effort to be stopped.

2
Collective action often involves larger scales, since there are more
people involved.

The American Youth Service (2019) made a list of simple programs we

can do to help protect the environment

• Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Program. Cut down on what you throw
away. Follow the three "R's" to conserve natural resources and landfill
space.
• Volunteer Program. Volunteer for cleanups in your community. You can
get involved in protecting your watershed, too.
• Educate Program. When you further your own education, you can help
others understand the importance and value of our natural resources.
• Water Conservation Program. The less water you use, the less runoff
and wastewater that eventually end up in the ocean.
• Choose Sustainable Program. Learn how to make smart seafood
choices.
• Shop wisely Program. Buy less plastic and bring a reusable shopping
bag.
• Use long-lasting light bulbs Program/Energy Conservation Program.
Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also flip
the light switch off when you leave the room!
• Tree Planting Program. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save
energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.
• Non chemicals Use Program. Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home
and office.
• Biking Practice Program. This is done by choosing to use bicycle rather
than vehicles

These are just some of the things that you can do to help protect the
environment. Students are constantly learning how they can make a
difference in the world. As a student, through helping the environment and
preserving our resources, you are already making a huge difference not only
in your community but also in the world. Your simple action has so much
impact one the world’s resources. What you do makes a difference!

Activity: Community Action Plan

Instructions: Cite one environmental problem that you have experienced or

encountered in your own community (e.g., Flooding). Then, state the coping
approach that you took to deal with the problem. Lastly, propose a possible
action plan to solve that particular problem in your community. Write your
answers on the scroll below.

Guide Questions:
1. Why do you think is the cause of that problem?

Let Us Remember
Our actions have large impacts on the environment. Collective Action refers
to the actions taken by a collection or group of people, acting based on a collective
decision to help protect and preserve the environment.

Some of the programs listed by the American Youth Service (2019) are:
1. Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle Program
2. Volunteer Program
3. Educate Program
4. Water Conservation Program
5. Choose Sustainable Program

5
6. Shop wisely Program
7. Use long-lasting light bulbs Program/Energy Conservation Program
8. Tree Planting Program
9. Non chemicals Use Program

Let Us Assess

Direction: Listed inside the box are the different projects and programs that
you could do to help preserve the environment. Classify the following into
different categories. If you think it could be done in your school, write it inside
the star symbol; if it could be done in the community, write it inside the sun
figure; lastly, if it could be done both in your school and in the community,
write it inside the heart symbol.

Let Us Enhance
Instructions: Complete the statement and write something about what you
learned about the Collective Action for the Environment. Answer it in a
creative way as long as it will answer on the following statement.

Let Us Reflect
There is strength in unity. You haven’t really thought much about unity
when you were young, right? As what Hellen Keller said, “Alone we can do so
little; together we can do so much.” This much is true when we deal with
pressing environmental issues and are faced with environmental degradation.
When a group of people act based on a collective decision, it is called a
collective action. Collective Action for the Environment is needed to avoid total
depletion of natural resources.

As a teenager, you hold great potential for a change. Your innocence,

endless first discoveries and your dreams make up the world around you. The
most important thing the world needs today is change — to change people’s
destructive ways of living which negatively impact the environment. Seek
unity for a common good and have the courage to think differently, to invent,
and to discover the solutions to problems. People who come together and form
a collective action to do something self-sacrificing like saving the environment
are bound to achieve great things.

Congratulations! You have accomplished this module and you did a

great job! I hope you enjoy answering this module and continue this
enthusiasm with the following modules. See you! God Bless.

Community Action Plan Sample Answer
In our barangay, we always experience flood even if it’s only a mild rain. This problem has
been aggravating the community for a long time now. One time, I went home late from school and
there was a heavy rain. On my way home, I was shocked because I can no longer pass the street
leading to our house because of the flood water consuming the streets. To get home, I could either
wait for the flood water to subside or I could go down into the flood. I decided to wait for the water
to subside since I’m scared of getting leptospirosis. So, I waited until morning. It was a sad and
dreadful experience. I wouldn’t want for it to happen again in our barangay. For a possible
community action plan to fight the flood, I think we, the residents, should practice proper waste
management and to not throw our garbage in the canal since it blocks the flow of water, thus
causing the flood. Also, as a community, we could do a “bayanihan” every month to clean the
canals and we could plant more trees in the vacant lots in our community.

hands to protect what is left of our planet so that
the future is not wiped out before it’s too late.
