Hitler’s Lightning War

1. Blitzkrieg was described as a fast way to end a battle, hitler would rush
in with tanks
and planes, using his encirclement movements to take armies.

they didn’t have enough ships to evacuate all people, the people of
London used their ships to bring their countrymen home.

Japan’s Pacific Campaign

1. On December 7, 1941 Japan attacked Pearl Harbor because it was an


important point that could be used against Japan, and it needed to be
destroyed in order for a Japanese Victory.
2. Japan had many victories such as Guam and Wake Island were some of
Japan’s major victories and war efforts. They also challenged Britain’s
land in Asia. They took Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.
3. They treated them horribly. For instance, they forced soldiers to watch
as their fellow army men were killed and buried. They forced them to
dig their own graves and then killed them.

became worried that the Allies have a chance at winning.

and surprised the Japanese and this was a very significant victory in

The holocaust

camps and made them do manual labor with harsh conditions and
death.

The Allied Victory.

1. an Allied force with more than 100,000 troops of mostly Americans,


landed in Morocco and Algeria
2. Now, on August 23, 1942 the battle for Stalingrad began. The city was
an industrial center on the Volgograd River. Then when attacked it
became a bombing site and was named after the death of Stalin for
defending the city. By November 1942, Germans had 90 percent of
Stalingrad that was ruined. When the Soviet troops launched a
counterattack, it trapped german troops inside and cut off their
supplies. General Paulus wanted Hitler to retreat because the city was
destroyed, but Hitler wanted the city and declined the general’s
request. On February 2, 1943, about 90,000 german troops
surrendered because they were starving. These were the only survivors
of 330,000 Stalingrad defense that remained. It cost the Soviets more
than one million soldiers to take over Stalingrad. The city of Stalingrad
was 99 percent destroyed and the rest of the german soldiers lead the
soviets steadily westward.
3. On July 10, 1943, The Allied forces went to Sicily and took it from
Italian and German troops a month later. On September 3, Italy
surrendered, but then The Germans took control of the north side of
Italy. When Italy was ambushing German trucks, they found Mussolini
and shot him. Then they hung his body in the downtown part of Milan
for everyone to see.

5. In 1943 the Allies started to construct a secret invasion force in Great
Britain. The force would be used to attack German-held France across
the English Channel.

toward Germany from the west and the Soviet Union advanced from
the East. Hitler responded by counter-attacking the Allied Forces in the
west. He believed that a victory in the west would cause the American
and British armies to split and break up the Allied supply lines. The
Battle of Bulge would decide the fate of Germany. On December 16 th,
German forces, comprised of tanks, advanced through the American
defenses on the front of Ardennes. The Allies fought back and forced
the Germans to retreat. The Battle of Bulge was a huge loss for
Germany.

Europe and Japan in Ruins!

Question 1 – In Two sentences describe the situation in Europe after the war
ended.

Answer 1 – After the war Europe was left in ruins and devastation. Many
Millions of European citizens had died.

Question 2 – Why did so many Europeans take to the roads and wander the
countryside after the war?

Answer 2 – The Europeans had been left without a home and were searching
for a place to live. Also some people found themselves in the wrong
countries when postwar treaties changed natural borders. They were
wandering to find their families or a safe place to live.
Question 3 – How did the allies deal with the issue of warcrimes in Europe?

Answer 3 – The allies changed the governments in the countries that


committed the war crimes such as Germany, Italy and Japan and also held
the Nuremberg Trials where 22 Nazi leaders were placed on trial for crimes
against humanity, The murder of 11 million people. Some of the Nazi leaders
were sentenced to life and other were sentenced to death.

Question 4 – What were two of the most important steps that MacArthur took
in Japan following the war?

Answer 4 – MacArthur first began a process of demilitarization where he


disbanded the Japanese armed forces. MacArthur also put Japanese war
criminals on trial where 7 were executed. He then installed a democracy and
installed a new Constitution. He turned Japan into a constitutional monarchy
like one of Great Britain. Lastly he sold land to tenant farmers for reasonable
prices. He also gave pushed a reform that gave the rights to workers to
create independent labor unions.

5 – How did the aftermath of the war in Europe differ from the aftermath of
the war in Japan?

Answer 5 – it differed because the war in Europe let to disputes on territories.


Aftermath of the war in Japan led to Western Expansion towards Japan and
lead towards further humanitarian problems due to the radiation from the
nuclear bombs.
