By Mike Brandt
The Glasgow cross country
team likes to participate in the big
meets. This year the Scotties open in
Billings at Amend Park Friday. The
following week the Scotties are in
Williston, then Havre.
This year they travel to Missoula
for the Mountain West Classic.
This meet draws athletes from
Washington, Idaho, and Montana.
This is the largest race the Scotties
will participate in. This course, the
University of Montana Golf Course,
is also the site of the state meet.
The Glasgow girls finished
runners-up last year. Tanae Baker,
a senior, is the defending state
Class B champion. She is joined
by fellow seniors Kheyrah Bilger,
Mary Dykstra, and Riley Evenson-
Glasoe. Juniors Kimber Dulaney
and Josie Kemp, and sophomores
Haleigh Huntsman and Jensina
Tweten.
“The girls return a very talented
squad that finished second at state
last year,” said second-year Glasgow
coach Tim Phillips. “We lost a real
quality runner to graduation; Emily

According to sources, the pair prepped for the
softball interview long into the night. Walz had hoped
to prepare her enough that he wouldn’t have to go, but
reluctantly, he called it a night after she failed to answer
a question about her favorite ice cream flavor.
“Come on, this is easy,” said Walz.
“Well, there’s just so many flavors!” Harris said,
unable to contain her laughter. “There’s chocolate, of
course; always a classic. And vanilla! Right? But what
is flavor? The flavor is what our tongue likes. If it likes
something, right? Then we like it. You know? And ice
cream is more expensive these days. It’s getting harder
and harder to put ice cream on the table. And I know that
because I also have a table. I have a house. I have a car.
But some people don’t have those. So basically, that’s bad.”
At publishing time, Kamala Harris had been asked
about Israel but fortunately Tim Walz had interrupted
just in time by shouting, “I like dogs!”

Phillips has a good group back with four seniors,
two juniors and two sophomores.
“There’s a great core group returning, led by last
year’s individual state champ, Tanae Baker,” Coach
Phillips was happy to report, although, “She’s dealing
with an off-season injury but we hope to have her back
running within a few weeks. She’s a tremendous talent
and that’s enough time for her to return to form. Haleigh
Huntsman is our other returning all-stater and I look
for more great things from her this fall. She’s coming
off a great swim season, as is Kimber. And Kimber is
coming in healthy this year - I’m really excited about
that!”
Phillips added, “Kheyerah put in a LOT of miles
this summer - she had a breakout year last fall and I
look for an even bigger leap this year. Mary and Riley
are our other seniors - they are working through some
minor injuries early, as is Josie. But they have still been
putting in some real good effort so far this year. And
Jensina rounds out our group of returners - she had a
really good time trial on Saturday and it won’t take her
long to get past where she was last year.
Phillips had a young boys group last year.
“We’ve got a great group of boys coming back.
We only lost James to graduation last year. He was a
great team leader and both he and Reed Larsen came
up and ran with the team a bit this summer,” Phillips
said. “Senior Kyler Holinde is our top returner. He’s
the individual state 800 meter champ from class B this
spring and has really been racking up the miles since -
he should have a great fall!”
Phillips added “Our other seniors are Adam
Mickelson, Ted See and Owen Thompson. They all
made great progress last fall; it’s a great group to build photo by Andrew McKean
