Learning Objectives:
At the end of the unit, the students should be able to:
● define and illustrate sequence
● analyze a given sequence for its rule and identify the next terms
● illustrate and solve Fibonacci sequence

The Fibonacci sequence

The human mind is hardwired to recognize patterns. In Mathematics, we can generate patterns by performing
one or several mathematical operations repeatedly.
Sequence is an ordered list of numbers, called terms that may have repeated values. The arrangement of these
terms is set by a definite rule.
Example: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 This is a sequence of even numbers with 5 terms.
What is the 4th term? The 4th term is 8

Example: Generating a sequence


Analyze the given sequence for its rule and
identify the next three terms.

Solution The difference between the 1st and the 2nd terms (2 and 5) is
a. Looking at the set of numbers, it can be 3.
observed that each term is a power of 10: The difference between the 2nd and the 3rd terms (5 and 9) is
1= 4.
10 = Any number raise to zero is equal The difference between the 3rd and the 4th terms (9 and 14)

3terms, we should add 7, 8, 9, respectively, to the current

Item b is a special sequence called Fibonacci sequence. It is named after an Italian Mathematician Leonardo of Pisa
known by his nickname Fibonacci. He discovered this sequence as he looked at how hypothesized group of rabbits bred
and reproduced.

He noted that the set of numbers generated from this problem could be extended by getting the sum of the two
previous terms.
Starting with 0 and 1, the succeeding terms in the sequence can be generated by adding the two numbers that can came
before the term:

1+1=2 0, 1, 1, 2 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13
1+2=3 0, 1, 1, 2, 3 In this sequence Fib(1) =1

3+5=8 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8 Fib (3) = 2
5 + 8 = 13 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13 Fib(1) is read as Fibonacci one.

Fibonacci sequence has many interesting properties, its


pattern is very visible in nature. Some of nature’s beautiful
patterns like the spiral arrangement of sunflower seeds, the
number of petals in a flower and the shape of a snail shell.

The sequence 1, 2, , 5, 8, 13 is a Fibonacci.
It is also interesting to note that the ratios of successive Fibonacci numbers approach the number ᵩ (Phi) also known as
the Golden Ratio. The number is approximately 1.618

1. Let Fib(n) be the nth term of the Fibonacci sequence, 2. The same given in no.1, evaluate the following sums:
