Accomplishment Report on Nagbalaye High School’s Reading Intervention

S.Y. 2021-2022
(Grade 10-Felicity)

Rationale

The Department of Education (DepEd) supports Every Child a Reader Program, which
aims to make every Filipino child a reader and a writer at his/her grade level. Thus, the
DepEd through the Bureau of Learning Delivery-Teaching and Learning Division (BLD-
TLD) continue to administer the Oral Reading Verification (ORV) assessment to learners in
public secondary schools nationwide.

One of its objectives is to utilize the data gathered from the assessment to serve as one
of the bases in planning, designing/redesigning the reading instruction of the teachers and the
school’s reading programs or activities to improve the overall school’s reading performance.

Nagbalaye High School upholds this reading program. Based on the ORV findings
which was conducted on April 18-19, 2022 to all JHS and SHS students, it showed that some
of the students had poor reading comprehension skills and they need immediate remediation.

By conducting remedial instructions, reading exercises, and distributing reading

materials every Monday and Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:00 p.m. to those identified students
in the last two quadrants of the ORV form, the students increased their reading levels from
frustration to instructional and independent levels.

Activities
The advisers and the subject teachers served as the reading coordinators who conducted
remedial reading to those identified students who had reading difficulties based on the ORV
test.

The reading coordinator distributed reading materials to the advisers and subject teachers to
assess their level in the ORV. This was done for two days from April 18-19, 2022 to cater
students in SET A and SET B classes. After the assessment, ORV forms were returned to the
advisers and they identified the students in the last two quadrants.

In Grade 10-Felicity, students were given reading remediation following the schedule in the
action plan. In addition, the students brought the reading materials to be read at home with
their parents. In the reading exercises, the comprehension questions were answered by the
students through the guide questions given by the teacher.

There were 58 students who have been part of the ORV Assessment in Grade 10 –
Felicity and their Level of Comprehension was divided into five groups; Independent,
Instructional A, Instructional B, Frustration, and Non-Reader. From the pretest result it was
identified that there were 2 Independent readers (3%), 9 Instructional A readers (16%), 30
Instruction B (52%), 17 Frustration readers (29%), and 0 Non-Readers.

The post test was then conducted on May 27 and June 3, 2022 after the remedial
reading activities and the result gradually improved. The post test result shows that there were
10 Independent readers (17%), 23 Instructional A readers (40%), 22 Instructional B readers
(38%), 3 Frustration readers (5%), and 0 Non-readers.

Considering the data presented, there is an increase percentage in Independent and

Instructional readers and decrease percentage in Frustration level.
