CONICS

6.53
CONIC
Conics or conic sections – are curves formed by
cutting a double right circular cone by a plane at
various angles. These curves are the boundaries of the
sections exposed by the cuts. It also knows as
nondegenerate conics are the circle, parabola, ellipse
and hyperbola.
It is also defined as the path of the point which
moves so that its distance from a fixed point called the
focus is in a constant ratio to its distance from a fixed
line called the directrix.
CONIC
Conics are essentially formed by the following:
1. If the cutting plane is parallel to the base of the cone,
then the conic is a circle.
2. If the cutting plane is parallel to a plane tangent to
the cone, then the conic is a parabola.
3. If the cutting plane is not parallel to a plane tangent to
the cone, then the conic is an ellipse.
4. If the cutting plane intersects both the cones, then the
conic is a hyperbola.
THE CIRCLE

A circle is a set of all points in a

plane that are equidistant from a fixed
point. The fixed point is called the
center of the circle given the notation
C. The equal distances is the radius of
the circle denoted by r. It is the line
segment joining the center and may
point on the circle.
The Standard Equation of a Circle
The standard equation of a circle can be derived by using the
distance formula with the coordinates of the point of the center of
the circle at (0,0) and radius r, as follows.
The distance formula:
(𝑥 − 0)2 + (𝑦 − 0)2 = 𝑟
Squaring both sides, then simplifying the equation, we have
(𝑥 − 0)2 + (𝑦 − 0)2 = 𝑟 2
𝑥2 + 𝑦2 = 𝑟2
The Standard Equation of a Circle
Hence, the standard form of the equation of a circle with
coordinates of the point of its center at (h, k) and radius r is as
follows:
(𝑥 − ℎ)2 + (𝑦 − 𝑘)2 = 𝑟 2
The General Equation of a Circle
Hence, the standard form of the equation of a circle with
coordinates of the point of its center at (h, k) and radius r is as
follows:
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑦 + 𝑐 = 0
𝑥 2 + 𝑦 2 + 𝐷𝑥 + 𝐸𝑦 + F = 0
