Tutorial 1
Q1. A 1020 CD steel shaft is to transmit 20 hp while rotating at 1750 rpm. Determine the minimum
diameter for the shaft to provide a minimum factor of safety of 3 based on the maximum shear stress
theory.
Q2. The stresses induced at a critical point in a machine component made of steel 45C8 (Syt = 380
N/mm2) are as follows: σx = 100 N/mm2 σy = 40 N/mm2 τxy = 80 N/mm2. Calculate the factor of safety by
(i) the maximum normal stress theory, (ii) the maximum shear stress theory, and (iii) the distortion
energy theory.
Q3. A critical point in a machine part is subjected to a steady load that gives 200 100 130
rise to a triaxial state as given. The material yield strength is 800 MPa. Will the 100 300 60 MPa
part fail by the distortion energy theory? 130 60 400
Q4. Compute factors of safety, based upon the
distortion energy theory, for stress elements at
A and B of the member shown in the figure.
This bar is made of AISI 1006 cold-drawn steel
and is loaded by the forces F = 0.55 kN, P = 4.0
kN, and T = 25 Nm.
Q6. Two steel tubes are shrink-fitted together where the nominal diameters are 40, 45, and 50 mm.
Careful measurement before fitting determined the diametral interference between the tubes to be
0.062 mm. After the fit, the assembly is subjected to a torque of 900 Nm and a bending-moment of 675
Nm. Assuming no slipping between the cylinders, analyze the outer cylinder at the inner and outer
radius. Determine the factor of safety using distortion energy with Sy = 415 MPa.
Q7. Find the diameter of the hole if the stress concentration factor there
is to be the same as at the fillet.
