Starter Solenoid

Receives a large electric current from the car battery and

a small electric current from the ignition switch.

When the ignition switch is turned on, a small electric

urrent is sent to the starter solenoid.

This causes the starter solenoid to close a pair of heavy

start the engine, which converts electrical energy of the

battery into mechanical energy. This starting motor is fitted

on the side of the engine nearer to fly wheel.

Requirements of Starting System:

Always the system should be in ready position for
starting the engine.
Working Principle of Starting Motor:

When the current is passed through an armiature coil

placed between two stationary magnets the armature starts to

rotate.

6.6 Conductor carrying current held in magnetic field

Fig. :
When the current is passing through a conductor
(armature) which produces rich or concentric magnetic lines
of force around the conductor of Assume the conductor the
conductor (armature) placed between N and S magnetic
poles as shown in the above figure.

In this case the lines of force in opposite direction will

counteract each other, while those in the same direction will
add up to make bent lines of force as shown in the fig. It
means that it strengthens the magnetic field to the left side
and weaknes the magnetic field to the right of the conductor
which causes the lines of force to distort around the
conductor. Thus it helps to move the armature (conductor)
faster.
