Topic: Evaluating Function:

On page 10 of your book, one example is 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 + 1. Evaluate functions at x= 1.5

Solution: you are going to replace x from 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 + 1 into 1.5.

➢ 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2𝑥 + 1.
➢ 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 2(1.5) + 1. Replace the value of x into 1.5, then multiply
➢ 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 3 + 1. Add 3 and 1
➢ 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 4 final answer.

Another example there is : 𝑥 2 𝑞(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 2. Evaluate x at 1.5

➢ 𝑥 2 𝑞(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 + 2.
➢ 𝑞(𝑥 ) = (1.5)2 − 2(1.5) + 2.
➢ 𝑞(𝑥 ) = 2.25 − 3 + 2.
➢ 𝑞(𝑥 ) = −1.25 + 2
➢ 𝑞(𝑥 ) = 1.25.

Read and understand other examples on page 10 and 11. Then answer the following
exercises taken from page 12.

1. Evaluate the following functions at 𝑥 = −4

a. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = 𝑥 3 − 64
b. 𝑔(𝑥 ) = 𝑥 2 − 12
c.

9 − 𝑥2 , 𝑥 < 2
2. 𝑓 (𝑥 ) = {√𝑥 + 7 , 2 ≤ 𝑥 10 Give the values of piecewise function at 𝑥 = 2.
𝑥 − 4 𝑥 ≥ 10
