Dexters board of education passed a motion to implement all-day kindergarten Monday night, much to the satisfaction of several district administrators and teachers. Cornerstone Elementary Principal Craig McCalla and Bates
Elementary Principal Tim Authier have been pushing for the move to a full-day kindergarten program since 2008 and were relieved to hear the decision. A full-day program, they believe, will provide a better education for the districts students. We really think that the all-day kindergarten
program we can offer will enhance the educational experience for all of our kids in Dexter, McCalla said. The full-day program would give students more one-on-one time with teachers, and a more indepth study of current curriculum, McCalla said. If you go and take the curriculum we have,
not add, but just take the time to go in depth with what we need to go in kindergarten, he said at the Nov. 21 meeting. If we have that time down in kindergarten, when they get to first grade the skills will be better built, better developed, that itll be easier in first grade for those kids to learn. I think it would actually make it a
little bit easier. The district surveyed parents, and of the 340 people who responded, 82 percent were in favor of the switch, McCalla said. Parent and Dexter resident Tina Jones said she believes the program would benefit her 4-yearold son. Currently, he

This year, 18 businesses participated in the Winterfest Contest: Absolute Computer/Palmer Insurance, Artistica, Aubrees Christines, Dexter Flowers, Dexter Health Center, Dexter Mill, Generations Together, Huron Camera, Joe and Rosies, Life is Good, Lucky Haskins, Modern Vintage, Nichols and Stafford, Red Brick Kitchen, Salon Underground, Simpson Family Chiropractic and TCF Bank. Modern Vintage, Nichols and Stafford, Aubrees, Lucky Haskins, and Salon Underground all participated for the first time this year as they are new businesses to the village. Modern Vintages staff is excited to have put down its roots in Dexter and is even more excited to be participating in the Winterfest contest this year. Our window inspiration comes from our shop name, Modern Vintage, co-owner Amber Sears said. We have a vintage silver tinsel tree from the 50s as the centerpiece of the display, surrounded by modern

Laura Telesco and Cathy Swan, co-owners of Nichols and Stafford, wanted the windows to have that frosted glass look that old windows would have had in the winter from indoor warmth, which is the feeling the co-owners said they want people to have when they step inside the store. We used Christmas items that we have for sale, aside from the Christmas tree and ornaments that were made by Grandma Nichols, Telesco said. Amy Bulszewicz, co-owner of Aubrees, considered cost above all else. With 65 lineal feet of windows to decorate, she wanted to utilize all the space without spending big bucks, while still showcasing something off the menu. We painted the penne pasta red and green and rolled them in matching glitter, Bulszewicz said. We then found some inexpensive plastic bulbs and strung them along with the pasta onto fishing line. We then hung three of the strands on each window along the front of the restaurant. There are many fabulous window displays to be seen in Dexter, and the Dexter Chamber of Commerces WinterFest Window Contests voting will be open until Dec. 26. When viewing the displays, voters are asked to keep in mind the different categories: best window design, most creative window design and best use of product in a window design. Voting takes place at the chambers website: http://dexterchamber.org.

Dexter families in need will have a brighter Christmas this year thanks to both the generosity of their fellow residents and the tireless efforts of Dexter Family Services. For more than 50 years, Dexter Family Services has been helping Dexter and Chelsea families with emer-
gent needs for food and clothing as well as funding to help pay utility bills and rent. Every year throughout the holiday season, DFS collects hundreds of nonperishable food items and personal care essentials to pack in boxes for the needy in our community. The boxes are stuffed with much-needed nonperishable food and personal items such as shampoo and
soap as well as toothbrushes and toothpaste donated by local dental offices. Each box also contains gift certificates for local grocery stores, provided by Dexter Family Services. The group, in conjunction with Faith in Action, goes a step beyond satisfying emergent needs throughout the holiday season by pairing needy families and individuals
with willing donors who purchase gifts from the familys Christmas or holiday wish list. According to DFS Secretary, Jane Boyce, the family sponsors are not only individuals willing to help, several local churches and businesses often adopt families in need as well. Local firefighters, as well as members of the American Legion, will deliver all of the boxes
and Christmas packages Saturday morning, according to Boyce. This is really a whole community effort, she said. Since Thanksgiving, each of Dexters schools has called upon students and parents to help those in need by donating nonperishable items to help fill
