QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS OF INORGANIC COMPOUND

Aim: To identify one acidic radical radical from given unknown inorganic salt.

It is carried out in three steps.

(A) Preliminary Examination:

(B) Detection of Acidic Radical (anion):

(C) Detection of Basic Radical (Cation):

PRELIMINARY EXAMINATION:

Flame Test: No characteristic flame (Cu2+, Ca2+ , Ba2+ ,Sr2+ ,Pb2+ ,

Zn2+absent)

Acidic (Anion) Radical

Preliminary test with dilute HCl, Dil and Conc.Sulphuric acid

Experiment Observation Inference

1] Action of dil.HCl: Salt Solution is treated Nothing characteristics Absence of
with dilute Hydro chloric acid Carbonate anion
2]Action of dil.H2SO4:Salt is rubbed with dilute Nothing characteristics Absence of Acetate
sulphuric acid anion
3] Action of conc.H2SO4 : Salt is warmed with a colourless gas with may contain Cl– ions
few drops of conc.H2SO4 . pungent smell (HCl) present
evolved.
the gas gives dense white fumes with Cl– ions may present
ammonia solution(Glass rod ), then the salt
may contain Cl– ions
Salt solution acidified with dilute HNO3 on a curdy white precipitate Cl– ions present
addition of silver nitrate solution soluble in ammonium
hydroxide solution.

Confirmatory test for Chloride anion

Chromyl chloride test : Take 0.1 g salt and a Reddish orange gas
pinch of solid potassium dichromate in a test is evolved
tube, add conc. H2SO4 , heat
and pass the gas evolved through sodium It becomes yellow
hydroxide solution.
Divide the solution into two parts.
Acidify one part with acetic acid and add lead A yellow precipitate of lead Presence of Chloride
acetate solution. chromate is formed. anion confirmed.
Acidify the second part with dilute sulphuric After gentle shaking the
acid and add 1 mL of amyl alcohol followed by organic layer turns blue.
1 mL of 10% hydrogen peroxide.
