Course Description:

This course aims at giving students the fundamentals principles and practices for further development
in the mathematics program offered at our institution. At the end of the summer class, students will be
able to build on what they have learned. They will also foster positive attitude towards the mastery of
mathematical skills necessary at the first form level and for life.

Course Rationale:

This course is designed to bridge the gap from the elementary math syllabus to the lower secondary
mathematics at our institution. It provides students with the basic knowledge, skills and understanding
in, Computation. The study of Mathematics at this institution will focus on developing logical reason-
ing and problem-solving skills that students will employ to make informed decisions in their everyday
lives.

Specific Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Perform basic and mixed operations involving whole numbers, common fractions with like and un-
like denominators, improper fractions and mixed numbers using the order of arithmetic operation.
g. Calculate any fraction of a given quantity and express one quantity as a fraction of another.
h. Perform basic and mixed arithmetic operations involving decimals.
i. Represent numbers on a real number line.
j. Define directed numbers and the absolute value of numbers.
k. Find the additive inverse of a positive and negative number.
l. Define and calculate profit, loss, discount.
m. Define algebra and the importance of algebra.
n. Use symbols to represent an algebraic statement.
o. Identify a term, the coefficient of a term, and an algebraic expression
p. Perform basic and combined arithmetic operations with algebraic terms.

 Students are expected to sit in the seat assigned to them.
 During quizzes and tests, cheating and or talking will not be tolerated. Anyone
caught cheating will receive a failing grade.
