ALLITERATIONS
Alliteration happens when the beginning of words
start with the same consonant or vowel sounds.
All the words must be close together.

An example of alliteration is: “She sells seashells by

the seashore.” The ‘s’ sound is repeated at the start
of most words.

2
HYPERBOLE
Hyperbole is a figure of speech
that uses exaggeration to give a
certain impact within your
statement.

EXAMPLE:
I’m so hungry, I could eat a horse!
(The underlined words are
exaggerations.)
3
METAPHOR
A metaphor is a figure of speech that compares dissimilar
objects that are alike in some way.
They help create a clearer picture.
DO NOT use these words: like, as, than, similar to and
resembles.

EXAMPLES:
My teacher is a monster. (meaning the teacher is evil)
She’s such an angel! (meaning she’s very kindhearted)
I asked him out but he broke my heart. (he rejected you)
4
SIMILE
A simile is a figure of speech which
resembles a metaphor but uses these
words: like, as, than, similar to.
EXAMPLES:
As light as a feather - The kitten was as
light as a feather in my arms.
As brave as a lion - She faced the challenge
as brave as a lion.
Like two peas in a pod - The twins are like
two peas in a pod. 5
ONOMATOPOEIA
Onomatopoeia is the usage of word
which best demonstrates the sound
it makes.

Comics are a good resource to find

these “sound words” such as: crash,
boom, bang, crunch, kerplunk, zap
and buzz.

A two to three word phrase that contains opposite
words or ideas, contradictory to one another

8
PUNS
A play on words! They can be
used humorously, alike jokes.
But can also be used seriously in
literature.
