Lesson Plan in Mathematics 8

Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of key concepts of linear

inequalities in two variables and functions.
Performance Standards: The learner is able to formulate problems involving linear
inequalities in two variables and functions and solve these problems accurately using
a variety of strategies.
Learning Competency and Code: Verifies if a given relation is a function (M8AL-IIc-2)
Quarter: 3 Week: 2 Day: 1

I. Objectives:
At the end of the 50 minutes lesson, 80% of the learners are expected to:
1. Define a function;
2. Determine whether a relation is a function through ordered pairs, tables and
graphs; and
3. Label the domain and range of the relation.

II. Content:
Subject Matter: Functions
Integration: TLE (Marketing)
Strategies: Inquiry-Based Learning
Materials: Activity sheets, PPT,
References: Grade 8 Mathematics Pattern and Practicalities Lesson 5.2 Functions

III. Learning Tasks:

Preliminary Activities
 Prayer
 Checking of attendance
 Establish classroom orderliness/ Classroom Management
A. Elicit (2 minutes)
Running Faucet
 The teacher will flash the problem using PPT.

 The students will answer the following questions.

1. How many minutes will be 30 liters of water wasted?
2. Use the table to estimate the water wasted in 10 minutes.
3. Suppose 180 liters of water were wasted, how many minutes was the faucet left
running?
Answer:
1. 2 minutes 2. 150 liters 3. 12 minutes

1
B. Engage (3 minutes)
Where do I belong?
 The teacher will provide paper cut outs with set of ordered pairs, tables, and graphs.
The learners will determine each relation is a function or not function and paste in on
the board.

Given Mathematical Expressions:

Possible Answer:
Group 1
a. Function b. Not function c. Not function d. Function
Group 2
a. Not function b. Function c. Function d. Not Function

C. Explore (5 minutes)
 Based on the previous activity, the teacher will ask the following question:
1. What have you observed from the given activity?
2. What are the differences in each column?
3. What did you observe with the expressions when can we say that a relation is a
function or not?
Afterwards, process their responses in relating to the lesson.

D. Explain (20 minutes)

 Based on the previous activities and guide questions the following concepts will
be discussed:
 A function is a rule that pairs each element in one set called the
domain, with exactly one element from a second set, called the range.
 Every function is a relation but not every relation is a function.
 Learners will identify each of the following relation is/are (a) functions/s and label
the domain and range.

2
Answer:
a. Function domain: {1, 2, 3} range: {3, 4, 5}
b. Function domain: {1, 3, 4, 5, 6} range: {2, 4, 6, 6, 8}
c. Not function domain: {-3, -2, 1, 2, 3} range: {-1, 0, 1,2, 3}

E. Elaborate (5 minutes)
 Let the learners give the summary of the discussion by answering the following
questions:
1. When can you say that a relation is a function?

F. Evaluate (10 minutes)

Answer:
a. Not function domain: {1, 3, 5} range: {3, 6, 9, 12, 15}
b. Function domain: {2, 4, 6, 8, 10} range: {5, 10, 15, 20, 25}
c. Function domain: {-3, -1, 1, 3, 5} range: {0, 1, 2, 3, 4}

G. Extend (5 minutes)

3
 Cite real-life situations in your community that represent a relation that is
function.
Rubric:
10 points At least 5 real-life situations are cited.
8 points 3 to 4 real- life situations are cited.
6 points 2 real-life situations are cited.
4 points Only 1 real-life situation is cited.

Reflection:
A. No. of learners achieve 80%: ____
B. No. of learners who require additional activities for remediation: ___
C. Did the remedial lessons work? ___
D. No. of learners who have caught up the lesson: ___
E. No. of learners who continue to require remediation: ___
F. Which of my teaching strategies worked well? Why did these work? ___
G. What difficulties did I encounter which my principal or supervisor help me solve? ___
H. What innovation or localized materials did I used/discover which I wish to share with
other teacher? ___
