Chapter 1 – Networking Concepts

1) Networking Devices:
a. These are hardware devices which connect computers or other
electronic devices together in order to share files or resources such as
printers or fax machines (Definition Alert!!!)

2) Modem
a. It is a networking device that connects the computer to the available
internet connection over the existing telephone lines. (Definition
Alert!!!)
b. Process:
i. The sending modem converts the digital signals of a computer to
analog signals to enable their transmission via phone lines.
ii. The receiving modem then converts these analog signals back to
digital signals for the data to be understood.
c. Two types of modems are:
i. An Internal modem is one that is installed as a separate part on
the Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slots available on
the motherboard (Definition Alert!!!)
ii. An external modem is one that is connected externally to a
computer (Definition Alert!!!)
3) Hub
a. It is a networking device that connects multiple computers and
computing devices directly to the network by using fiber optic cables.
(Definition Alert!!!)
b. Each connection on a network set up using a hub is called a port.
(Definition Alert!!!)
c. Process: On receiving data at one of its ports, a hub distributes it to all
the connected ports.
d. Disadvantage – The use of a hub makes the network less secure and
results in unnecessary traffic on the internet.

4) Switch
a. It is a networking device that contains many ports to connect different
network segments. (Definition Alert!!!)
b. It is used to maintain the speed in case of large networks.

c. Process: On receiving data at one of its ports, a switch sends it only to

the intended port.
d. Advantage - The use of a switch makes the network more secure and
does not result in unnecessary traffic on the internet making it more
functional than a hub.

5) Repeater
a. It is a communication device that is used to regenerate a signal
b. Process: on receiving an electronic signal, a repeater cleans it and
retransmits it. (Definition Alert!!!)
c. Purpose: to ensure that they are transmitted over longer distances
without any distortion at the same or even a higher power

6) Router
a. It is a communication device that is used to connect two different
networks such as two LANs or a LAN and a WAN. (Definition Alert!!!)
b. Advantage - It chooses the best route for the data packets to be
transmitted and thus helps to control the traffic and keep a network
efficient and secured.

7) Gateway
a. It is a network point that acts as an entrance to another network using
different protocols and thus enables the user to enjoy various online
activities such as sending an email, browsing web pages, shopping or
banking online etc. (Definition Alert!!!)
b. It is also called a packet converter.
c. It works as a messaging agent that takes the data from one system,
interprets it and transfers to another system.

8) Bridge
a. It is a repeater with an add on functionality of filtering content by
reading the addresses of the source and destination.
b. It is used to interconnect two LANs working on the same protocol and
provide communication between them.
c. Advantage - it prevents unnecessary traffic from entering the network
and reduces congestion
