Welcome to Science!

Expectations!!!

What do you expect from the science class?

What do you expect from the science teacher?

What can I do to achieve the goals of the

subject during this year
Some
Recomendations…

1 During the classes:

• Take notes in the notebook

• Read the instructions carefully 2 After class: 3 Always:
• Use your time wisely
• Submit the activities properly • Review the topics and vocabulary Be honest with yourself and try to
• Participation counts • Practice, practice and practice achieve the goals of the classes!!!
• Speak English • Explain things aloud
• Individual and group activities • Ask for tutoring
Commitments

Raise your hand

Respect others

Be on time

Be ready for the class

Avoid distractions

Use your device properly

English all the time

Report if you have difficulties

Assessment…

Cognitive Procedure Attitude

• Quizzes • Classwork (Schoology) • Use of English

• Worksheets • Projects • Participation
• Mock test • Self-assessment • Responsibility
• Cumulative exams • Peer-assessment • Behavior
Content of the Course…

UNIT I: The basic units of life

UNIT II: Electricity running our world

UNIT III: I like to move it, move it!

UNIT IV: Matter matters

UNIT V: The Earth: our home

Lab Rules…

The science lab is a

special classroom and
for your own safety,
and because no one
wants to have an
accident in the lab, it's
imperative to follow
the lab safety rules.

Using the microscope

WARNINGS

Take the following things into account when using the microscope

Before changing the slides, move the stage as low as possible.

Always start the observation using the objective with less power (4X)

Move the objective lenses from the base

Change the objective lenses in order starting with the small one

Use the course focus know for the 4X objective and the fine focus know for the rest
Prokaryotic vs Eukaryotic Cells

PROKARYOTIC
❑ Bacteria
❑ No organelles
❑ No nucleus
❑ Smaller
❑ Simpler
EUKARYOTIC COMMON
❑ Organelles
❑ DNA
❑ Nucleus
❑ Ribosomes
❑ Animals, Plants, Fungi
❑ Cell membrane
❑ Larger
❑ Cytoplasm
❑ Complex
Cellular levels of organization
GOAL: Recognize the cellular levels of organization that form complex living things (multicellular)

Levels Plants Animals

Cells
Tissue Leaf tissue Bone tissue
Organs Leaves Bones
Organ systems Shoot Skeletal
Organism Mango tree Elephant
Organs
ACTIVITY

Research what is the main function of the following organs (don’t

forget to write the citations of the places you found the information):

• Heart • Bladder
• Lungs • Brain
• Stomach • Liver
• Small intestine • Pancreas
• Large intestine • Spleen
• Kidneys • Skin

Create a wordsearch with at least 10 of the words and ask the

teacher for the instructions to play the game.

Draw the human body with the organs that you learned paying
attention to their location and structure.
Organs: main function
Heart: Pumps blood around your body
Lungs: Allows gas exchange (Oxygen by carbon dioxide)
Stomach: Breaks down food into smaller pieces with the gastric juices
Small intestine: Absorbs nutrients from the food and take them to the blood
Large intestine: Absorbs water and salt from the food
Kidneys: Filter the blood to remove waste products to produce urine
Bladder: Stores urine
Brain: Controls the organs of body sending electrical signals
Liver: Cleans the blood and produces bile (a digestive liquid)
Pancreas: Controls the amount of insulin (sugar) in your body
Spleen: Helps to fight germs, filters damaged cells, and controls the amount of blood
Skin: Covers and protects everything inside the body, and control the temperature
Ovaries: Makes and stores eggs or ova and hormones in females
Testes: Produces sperm and hormones in males
Major Organs
Organ systems
GOAL: Recognize the organ systems in the human body

Agenda:
• Watch the video
• In your notebook, complete the following table:

Organ system Fuction Main organs

• Create a crossword using 10 of the words from the table

• Solve the crossword of a classmate
• Discussion and Feedback
• Classwork

Organ systems
GOAL: Recognize the organ systems in the human body

Organ System Function Main organs

Circulatory Transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones through the blood Heart, blood vessels (veins and arteries)
Digestive Breaks down food and absorbs the nutrients our body needs Stomach, intestines (large and small)
Endocrine system Regulates some body functions using hormones Glands, pancreas
Integumentary Protects the body against the outside world and control the temperatute Skin, Hair
Skeletal Supports the body, protects internal organs and produce blood Bones
Muscular Allows the body to move Muscles and tendons
Nervous Control the activities of the organs in your body Brain, spinal cord, nerves
Lymphatic/Immune Defends against foreign organisms Spleen, thymus
Respiratory Gas Exchange. Absorbes oxygen from the air and gets rid of CO2 Lungs, trachea, bronchi
Excretory/Urinary Elimination of waste products (urine) Kidneys, bladder
Reproductive Produces germ cells (eggs and sperm) that help to create babies F: Ovaries, Uterus
M: testes
Excretory system

Watch the video “How the Urinary System Works”, write the following questions in their
notebooks and answer them:

✓ Describe step by step how the excretory system works

✓ Many organ systems work together to perform a specific job, to what other systems do you
think the excretory system is connected? Explain your answer
✓ Why is water important for your body?
✓ Explain how can you know if your body has enough water?
✓ What similarities are there between the excretory system and the reproductive system

Organ systems working together
GOAL: At the end of this class, you must be able to explain how the circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems work together in
our body

ACTIVITY:
Explore the following websites:
• Circulatory system: https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/heart.html

• Respiratory system: https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/lungs.html

• Digestive system: https://kidshealth.org/en/kids/digestive-system.html

Create a poster explaining the following aspects

• How each of those 3 systems work?
• If all the cells in our body needs nutrients and oxygen in order to have energy to work properly, how these three systems are
connected to produce that energy?
