LANGUAGE TRANSFER
The learner transfers rules from the L1 to the L2.

According to the Contrastive Analysis

Hypothesis, errors probably arise where
there are great differences between the
learner’s mother tongue or any previously
acquired language and the language he or
she is trying to acquire. (Zhang, M. n.d.) (

OVERGENERALIZATION
Make mistakes applying grammar rules incorrectly. Native
speakers never would use it.

Overgeneralization is the phenomenon when one

overextends one rule to cover instances to which that rule
does not apply. This phenomenon may appear in different
aspects such as semantic, syntactic, morphological, or
behavioral. It is a systematic way that children create and
unconsciously use, and here appears the greater
opposition to the idea of imitation. (Al-Baldawi, W. N., &
Saidat, A. M. 2011, August)

simplification resulting from incomplete knowledge

of the target language is not the same as purposeful
simplification since, as Corder (1981) points out,
learners do not have the complex system which they
SIMPLIFICATION could simplify (Mahmoud, A. 2014).
INTERLANGUAGE
FOSSILIZATION

Selinker (1972) used the term fossilization to

refer to the tendency of many learners to stop
developing their interlanguage grammar in the
direction of the target language.
APPLICATIONS
TO TEACHING

information must be compiled. By using a

structures that produce the greatest number
of errors; the specific errors which occur most
frequently; the structures that are used
correctly most frequently.
