TO USE FRONT PANEL AND BLOCK DIAGRAM IN LABVIEW
OBJECT:
To become familiar with the LabVIEW Front Panel and Block diagram and their use.
FRONT PANEL:
Opening a new or existing VI pops up the Front Panel. The front panel window is the user interface of a VI.

Fig 1.1: Front Panel Window, Toolbar and Control Palette

CONTROLS PALETTE:
The Controls palette contains the Controls and Indicators (the interactive input and output of a VI, you used
to create the front panel. You access the Controls palette from the front panel window by selecting View
“Controls Palette or by right clicking on any empty space in the front panel window. The individual
Controls/Indicators are present in various Sub palettes. To place an Indicator/ Control from the Controls
Palette, just click on the Control and drag it in to the Front Panel. Any Control/ Indicator can be changed
into an Indicator/Control by right clicking on the Indicator/Control and selecting the Change to Indicator/
Control option. The sub palettes represent the types of Controls/ Indicators that one can have in LabVIEW.
Some commonly used sub palettes are:
NUMERIC SUB PALETTE:
The numeric data type can represent numbers of various types such as integer, floating point etc. The
different types of Controls/Indicators available are Displays, Slides, Scrolls, Knobs, Dials and Time Stamp
(for displaying time). Multiple Slides/Knobs can be added to Rotary Controls using the Shortcut Menu.
Time Stamp is a special type of numeric control which allows us not only to display the current time (from
the PC) but also custom time and time according to some calculation based on our VI. There are various
ways to change the value of numeric type controls:

1. Click the increment and decrement Buttons.

2. Double-click the number and enter a new number, press the <Enter> key on the Num Keypad.
3. Move the Needle/ Knob/ Pointer/ Slider/ Scroll Box for Rotary, Slide and Scroll Controls.
4. Time/Date Browse button for the Time Stamp.

Fig 1.2: Numeric Controls and indicators

BOOLEAN SUB PALETTE:
The Boolean Controls and Indicators can be used to create Buttons, Lights and Switches. All the Boolean
Controls/ Indicators have two states, either TRUE or FALSE, the only exception being the Radio Buttons
which is of an enumerated type. The working mechanism of switches can be changed by using the
Mechanical Action option from the Shortcut Menu. The logic state can be changed with the mouse cursor
depending on the type of switch.

POST LAB. ACTIVITY:

1. What are Controls and Indicators?

2. What is meant by a Sub VI in LabVIEW?

3. What are terminals?

4. What is purpose of the Connector Pane? How many connector patterns available in
LabVIEW?

5. Can one enter a complex value number in a numeric control in LabVIEW?

6. Define Block Diagram Nodes?

7. How do wires indicate/relate to the data type that they carry?

Conclusion:

TO MEASURE COMPONENT VALUES USING NI ELVIS II
OBJECT:

1. To measure different component values using NI ELVIS II.

EQUIPMENT/PARTS REQUIRED

1. NI ELVIS II
2. Prototyping board
3. Resistors having nominal resistances of 1 kΩ, 2.2 kΩ and 1 MΩ.
DISCUSSION:

Table 01: Boolean Controls and indicators

PROCEDURE

1. Connect the NI ELVIS II workstation to your computer using the supplied USB cable. The box
USB end goes to the NI ELVIS II workstation and the rectangular USB end goes to the computer.
Turn on your computer and power up NI ELVIS II (switch on the back of the workstation). The
USB ACTIVE (orange) LED turns ON. Then the ACTIVATE LED turns OFF and the USB
READY (orange) LED turns ON.

2. On your computer screen, click on the NI-ELVISmx Instrument Launcher icon or shortcut. A strip
of NI ELVIS II instruments appears on the screen (fig. 2.1). You are now ready to make
measurements.

Fig: 4.1: Instrument Launcher Icon Strip

3. Connect two banana-type leads to the digital multimeter (DMM) inputs (VA►├) and (COM) on
the left side of the workstation. Connect the other ends to one of the resistors.

4. Click on the DMM icon within the Launcher strip to select the digital multimeter (fig. 2.2).
You can use the DMM SFP for a variety of operations such as voltage, current, resistance, and capacitance
measurements. Use the notation DMM[X] to signify the X operation. The proper lead connections for this
measurement are shown on the DMM front panel.

5. Click on the Ohm button [Ω] to use the digital ohmmeter function, DMM[Ω]. Click on the green
arrow [Run] box to start the measurement acquisition. Measure the three resistors R 1, R2, and
R3.

Fig. 4.2: Digital Multimeter, Ohmmeter Configuration

RESULTS

Fill in the following data:

R1 ___________________ (1.0 kΩ nominal)

R2 ___________________ (2.2 kΩ nominal)
R3 ___________________ (1.0 MΩ nominal)

To stop the acquisition, click on the red square [Stop] box.
