Words of more than one syllable are written in as many strokes as are necessary
to complete the word, usually in syllables. A slash mark (/) is used in the text to indicate
the stroke division. It is not to be written. Examples: admit, AD/MIT; alone, A/LOEN;
jealous, JEL/US. (See notes below.)
Only one member of a double consonant is written when only one is sounded.
Examples: summer, SUM/ER; bitter, BIT/ER; winner, WIN/ER. (See notes.)
Vowel I is used for vowel Y at the end of a word. Examples: merry, MER/I;
empty, EM/TI; heavy, HEF/I. (See notes.)
When you read your notes, be alert to the phrase BUT THE in as much as it will
“look” like the fully-spelled word BUT.
Be sure to write the correct pattern for each arbitrary, and to read your notes
after each writing.

When the outline for a word is an arbitrary, the same Arbitrary outline is used for
the root word when writing a derivative. Examples: remembers, RERS; accounts, K-TS.
Be sure to read your notes after each writing. This is important to help you
organize the derivatives you have written.

Try to write numbers more and more by position—by finger association. Take
advantage of the learning power of your fingers—“muscle memory.”
The Keyboard Development sentences that follow will contribute to the flow of
your writing if you appreciate each sentence until there is no hesitation between strokes.
Be sure to read your notes.
