LOADING
1. An overhanging W920 × 449 rolled-steel beam supports a load P as shown. Knowing that
= P 700
= kN, a 2.5 m,=and σ all 100 MPa, determine (a) the maximum value of the normal
stress σ m in the beam, (b) the maximum value of the principal stress σ max at the junction of
the flange and web, (c) whether the specified shape is acceptable as far as these two stresses
are concerned.
2. Knowing that σ all = 24 ksi and τ all = 14.5 ksi, (a) select the most economical wide-flange
shape that should be used to support the loading shown. (b) Determine the values to be
expected for σ m , τ m , and the principal stress σ max at the junction of a flange and the web of
the selected beam.
3. Determine the smallest allowable diameter of the solid shaft ABCD, knowing that
τ all = 60 MPa and that the radius of disk B is r = 120 mm. .
4. Member AB has a uniform rectangular cross section of 10 × 24 mm. For the loading shown,
determine the normal and shearing stress at (a) point H, (b) point K.
5. The steel pipe AB has a 100-mm outer diameter and an 8-mm wall thickness. Knowing that
the tension in the cable is 40 kN, determine the normal and shearing stresses at point H..
6. Forces are applied at points A and B of the solid cast-iron bracket shown. Knowing that the
bracket has a diameter of 0.8 in., determine the principal stresses and the maximum shearing
stress at (a) point H, (b) point K.
7. Three forces are applied to the bar shown. Determine the normal and shearing stresses at (a)
point a, (b) point b, (c) point c.
8. Three forces are applied to the machine component ABD as shown. Knowing that the cross
section containing point H is a 20 × 40-mm rectangle, determine the principal stresses and the
maximum shearing stress at point H.
9. A 10-kN force and a 1.4-kN ⋅ m couple are applied at the top of the 65-mm diameter brass
post shown. Determine the principal stresses and maximum shearing stress at (a) point H, (b)
point K.
10. The billboard shown weighs 8000 lb and is supported by a structural tube that has a 15-in.
outer diameter and a 0.5-in. wall thickness. At a time when the resultant of the wind pressure
is 3 kips, located at the center C of the billboard, determine the normal and shearing stresses
at point H.
