QUESTION 7

7.1 Suppose that a certain amount of money was deposited into a bank account which
paid 8% per annum compounded half-yearly. After 4 years, the money has a value
of R2 000 000.

7.1.1 Convert this nominal interest rate into the equivalent effective rate. (2)

7.1.2 Using the nominal rate, calculate the amount of money originally deposited
into the bank account. (3)

7.2 An offer is made by an online investment company:

Invest now and you will receive ten times your money after only one year.

7.2.1 If the interest is compounded monthly, what would the annual interest rate
have had to be to achieve this? (3)

7.2.2 Why can you assume that this offer may well be a scam? (1)

7.3 Mark buys a car for R240 000. The depreciation rate on this item is 16% per annum
using the reducing balance method. Calculate the value of the car after 3 years. (2)

7.4 Mary invests a certain sum of money for 6 years. The investment earns interest at
5% p.a. compounded monthly, for the full term. She withdraws R7 000 from the
account after 18 months. After 6 years, the value of her investment is R78 924.
How much did Mary originally invest? (4)

QUESTION 8

A survey was conducted by a supermarket to find out which cheeses 150 of their customers
bought. The three cheeses chosen for the survey were:
blue cheese (B), gouda (G) and cheddar (C)

The following observations were made:

The probability that a customer, selected at random, will buy:

• only blue cheese is 0,24

• blue cheese and gouda, but not cheddar is 0,14
• gouda and cheddar, but not blue cheese is 0,12
• blue cheese and cheddar, but not gouda is 0,02
• at least one cheese is 0,7.

There were 15 customers who bought all three cheeses.

The number of customers that bought only gouda is the same as the number who bought only
cheddar.

The Venn diagram below shows some of the above information.

8.1 Determine x, the probability that a customer, selected at random, bought all
three cheeses. (1)

8.2 Determine z, the probability that a customer, selected at random, did not buy
any of the three cheeses. (1)

8.3 Determine the probabilities indicated by y. (2)

8.4 How many customers bought only cheddar? (2)

8.5 Determine P[(not G) and B]. (1)

QUESTION 9

9.1 A box contains four blocks with the number 10 painted on them, five blocks with the
number 9 painted on them and six blocks with the number 8 painted on them.
Two blocks are taken out at random and at the same time from the box.

9.1.1 Represent the above information on a tree diagram. (4)

9.1.2 Calculate the probability that the sum of the numbers on the blocks is 19. (3)

9.2 A survey concerning their holiday preferences was done with 180 people.
The options they could choose from were to:
• Go to the coast
• Visit a game park
• Stay at home

The results were recorded in the table below:

Coast Game Park Home Total

Male 46 24 13 83
Female 52 38 7 97
Total 98 62 20 180

9.2.1 Determine the probability that a randomly selected person does not prefer
visiting a game park. (2)

9.2.2 Are the events ‘being a male’ and ‘staying at home’ independent events?
Motivate your answer with relevant calculations. (4)
