TASK: Assignment 2 Submission Due Date: 03/04/2024
Instructions: Each group to select a member to present the solutions.
Magnetic Circuits

Question One
Answer each of the following
I. State the properties of magnetic flux
II. With reference to the magnetization curves and the hysteresis loops, recommend magnetic
materials suitable cores used in (a) power transformers, (b) current transformers for
measurement instruments, (c) current transformers for protection relaying systems, (d)
permanent magnets
III. state why magnetic cores are normally laminated?

Question Two
Determine the current I required to establish a flux of Φ=2 ×10−4Wb in the magnetic circuit of
Fig. 1 consisting of steel and an air gap. Given that the relative permeability of steel is 4000.
The area throughout is 1 c m2, the number of turns N = 200 and l g=0.2cm

Question Three
For the magnetic circuit of Fig. 2. and magnetization curves of Fig. 3.
I. State the rule used to assign the correct direction of magnetic flux. Therefore, re-draw the
magnetic circuit indicating the correct direction of flux.
II. Draw the electrical analogy for the magnetic circuit.
III. find the value of I required to develop a magnetic flux of 4 × 10−4 Wb
IV. determine μ and μr , for the magnetic material under these conditions.

Question Four
A cast steel magnetic structure made from a bar of section 8 cm by 2 cm is shown in Figure 4.
Determine the current that the 500 turn-magnetising coil on the left limb should carry so that a
flux of 2 mWb is produced in the right limb. Take μr = 600 and neglect leakage.

Question Five
A ring of mean diameter 21 cm and cross-section 10 cm2 is made up of semi-circular
sections of cast steel and cast iron. If each joint has reluctance equal to an air gap of 0.2 mm
as shown in Fig.1, find the magnetomotive force required to produce a flux of
−4
5 × 10 weber in the magnetic circuit. Take μr , for steel and iron as 825 and 165
respectively: Neglect leakage and fringing.
