Illustrating Permutation

of Objects
MATHEMATICS 10
Objectives
At the end of the learning session, you
should be able to:

1. Define Factorial Notation

2. Illustrate Permutation of Objects

LINE UP
List down 4 names in a sheet of paper. Arrange the
names in different arrangements. Take note of the
arrangements that you have made then count the
total number of arrangements.
Factorial Notation
In mathematics, factorial refers to the product of all positive
integers less than or equal to a particular positive integer. It is
usually denoted by that integer and an exclamation point.
𝒏! = 𝒏 × 𝒏 − 𝟏 × 𝒏 − 𝟐 × ⋯ × 𝟏

The expression is read as “n factorial”

Note: 0! = 1
Example:
1. 7!

2. 11!

3. 5!
Simplify:
8!
1. 5!

7!
2. 2!3!
Example:
In how many ways can you arrange the letters P, Q, R,
and S?
Permutation
Permutation is an arrangement of a group of
things in a definite order, that is, there is a first
object, a second, a third, etc. In other words, the
order of arrangement of the objects are important.
Ways on how to illustrate permutation of objects

1. Factorial Notation or Fundamental

Counting Principle

2. Tree Diagram

3. Listing Method
Fundamental Counting Principle

In Fundamental Counting Principle, if there are 𝑛1

ways to do one thing, and 𝑛2 ways to do another,
then there are 𝑛1 × 𝑛2 ways to do both.
Example:
If in climbing a certain mountain, there are 5 trails that could be
followed in gong to the top, 4 trails in going down, in how may ways
can the trip be done?
Example:
A chain of stores has three warehouses and twenty retail outlets. In
how many different ways can they ship an item from one of the
warehouse to one of the retail outlets?
Tree Diagram
Tree diagram is commonly used in Mathematics in
order to calculate the number of possible
outcomes of a particular event or problem.
Example:
A family has 3 children. Construct a tree diagram to show the possible
genders of the children.
Example:
How many possible outcomes are there in all?
Example:
Certain government employees are classified into two categories according to
sex and four categories according to marital status. List the different ways of
classifying one of the employees.
Listing Method
Listing method is basically one of the useful
methods to determine the number of permutations
made for each problem.
Example:
Certain government employees are classified into two categories according to
sex and four categories according to marital status. List the different ways of
classifying one of the employees.
Example:
How many 3-digit numbers with no repeated digits using 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 can be less
than 520?

Illustrating Permutation
of n Objects taken r at a
time
MATHEMATICS 10
Objectives
At the end of the learning session, you should be able to illustrate the
following:

1. Permutation of n objects taken r at a time;

2. Distinguishable Permutation;

3. Linear Permutation; and

4. Circular Permutation.
Let’s Try This!
In how many ways can 5 boys and 3 girls be seated in a row of 8 seats
if the ends are to be occupied by boys?
Permutation
Permutation is the arrangement of objects considering the order of the
objects. In short, order matters.

The permutation of n objects taken r at a time, denoted by 𝑛 𝑃𝑟 is

𝒏!
𝒏 𝑷𝒓 = ,𝒏 ≥ 𝒓
(𝒏 − 𝒓)!

Where n is the total number of objects and

r is the number of objects taken at a time

EXAMPLE
Evaluate the following:

1. 9 𝑃4

2. 12 𝑃6

3. 17 𝑃9
EXAMPLE
1. In how many ways can 12 students can be seated in a single row
of eight chairs?
Distinguishable Permutation
Distinguishable Permutation is a type of permutation that can be
distinguished from one another. Usually, words are being used as
examples.

𝒏!
We use the formula, ,
𝒏𝟏 !𝒏𝟐 !…𝒏𝒌 !
where 𝑛1 ! 𝑛2 ! … 𝑛𝑘 ! are the repeated items.
EXAMPLE
Find the number of distinct permutations of the letters in the word
SITSIRITSIT.
EXAMPLE
In the parking lot of a car manufacturing company, there are 12 new identical cars where 2
of them are red, 3 are blue, 5 are yellow, and 2 are white. In how many ways can the 12
cars be arranged?
LINEAR PERMUTATION
Linear Permutation is a type of permutation where the
arrangement of objects is in a form of a line or in a row.

We use 𝒏! to find the number of ways of arranging the

objects linearly.
EXAMPLE
In how many ways can 4 Algebra books and 3 Geometry books can be
arranged if:

a. there are no restrictions

EXAMPLE
In how many ways can 4 Algebra books and 3 Geometry books can be
arranged if:

a. Algebra books are on the left and Geometry books are on the right?
CIRCULAR PERMUTATION
Circular Permutation is a type of permutation where the
arrangement of objects is in a form of a fix circle.

We use (𝒏 − 𝟏)! to find the number of ways of arranging

the objects around a circle.
EXAMPLE
If eight people are to occupy eight sits around a circular table, how many
different arrangements are possible?
EXAMPLE
In how many ways can five children be seated at a round table if two
children insists on sitting next to each other?

be able to solve problems involving
permutations.

Linear Permutation
We use 𝒏! to find the number of ways of arranging
the objects linearly.
Circular Permutation
We use (𝒏 − 𝟏)! to find the number of ways of
arranging the objects around a circle.
Example 1:
A group of 16 people must select a president, a vice-president, a
secretary, a treasurer, and an auditor. In how many ways can this be
done?
Example 2:
