The Index of Eight Core Industries (ICI) increased by 4.0% in June 2024 compared to June 2023,
reflecting growth in sectors like Coal, Electricity, Natural Gas, Steel, Fertilizer, and Cement.
The ICI, which accounts for 40.27% of the weight in the Index of Industrial Production (IIP), tracks the
performance of eight core industries including Cement, Coal, Crude Oil, Electricity, Fertilizers, Natural
Gas, Refinery Products, and Steel.
For June 2024, significant growth was seen in Coal production which rose by 14.8%, and Electricity
generation, which increased by 7.7%.
In contrast, there was a decline in Crude Oil production by 2.6% and Petroleum Refinery Products by
1.5%.
The cumulative growth rate of the ICI from April to June 2024-25 was 5.7%, indicating a steady increase
in core industrial production over the period.
Specific examples include Steel production growing by 2.7% in June 2024, while Cement production
saw a more modest increase of 1.9% during the same period.
Bank credit growth slows to 13.9% in June on higher base effect, risk weight
Credit growth in the services and personal loan sectors has moderated, with bank credit growth slowing
to 13.9% in June, down from 16.3% a year earlier, according to RBI data.
This slowdown is attributed to an unfavorable base effect and the ongoing impact of increased risk
weights on unsecured consumer credit and bank credit to NBFCs implemented in November 2023.
The figures provided exclude the impact of the merger of HDFC with HDFC Bank.
CARE Ratings noted the deceleration in credit growth was due to a higher base and banks' efforts to
manage the credit-deposit ratio more conservatively.
In the services sector, credit growth substantially reduced to 15.1% in June, down from 26.8% the previous
year, particularly affected in the 'non-banking financial companies (NBFCs)' and 'trade' segments.
Personal loan growth also decreased to 16.6% in June from 21.3%, with significant moderation in 'other
personal loans' and 'advances against fixed deposits', though credit growth to 'housing' saw an increase.
India Ratings upgraded India's FY25 GDP growth projection to 7.5% from an earlier estimate of 7.1%,
surpassing the RBI's expectation of 7.2%.
This upgrade was prompted by growth momentum from the Union Budget announcements, which
emphasized spending on the agriculture and rural economy and MSMEs.
The agency anticipates these measures will boost demand significantly across these sectors.
Private final consumption expenditure is expected to grow by 7.4% year-over-year in FY25, marking
a three-year high and a significant increase from 4% in FY24, according to India Ratings.
India's major mineral imports, primarily non-critical, escalated by almost 80% in value over five years,
reaching ₹68,633 crore in FY24, though they experienced a slight dip of 2% year-on-year from ₹70,125
crore.
The significant minerals imported include copper-ore concentrates, phosphorite, manganese ore,
limestone, iron ore, bauxite, asbestos, sulphur, magnesite, and fluorspar, which collectively
constitute 97% of mineral imports.
In terms of volume, imports of these ten key minerals rose by 9% over five years to 619.42 lakh tonne.
Copper ore concentrate topped the import list with a value of ₹25,951 crore, nearly 40% of total major
mineral imports in FY24, more than doubling over five years. Phosphorite was the second-highest at
₹12,649 crore, also doubling over the period.
Other significant imports included manganese ore, limestone, and bauxite, with values at ₹7,760 crore,
₹6,616 crore, and ₹4,397 crore respectively. Meanwhile, iron ore imports declined, whereas manganese
ore and bauxite imports saw increases of 60-80% from FY19 to FY24.
In volume, the highest was limestone at 338.09 lakh tonne, comprising 55% of total imports, followed
by phosphorite at 55.98 lakh tonne or 14%. Additionally, imports of 24 categories of critical minerals
(excluding lithium-ion and copper) in FY24 were valued at ₹1,396.6 crore and totaled 82,260 tonne in
volume.
India's fiscal deficit for the first quarter of FY25 was ₹1.36 trillion, which is 8.1% of the full-year estimate.
The net tax receipts for the same period stood at ₹5.5 trillion, reaching 21% of the annual target, showing
an increase from ₹4.34 trillion during the same period last year.
Total government expenditure in the first quarter was ₹9.7 trillion, accounting for about 20.4% of the
annual budget, which is less than the ₹10.51 trillion spent a year earlier.

Wayanad, experiencing a severe landslide, was highlighted in a national-level database by the Indian
Space Research Organisation (ISRO) in 2023 for its high risk related to landslides.
It was ranked 13th among 147 districts in 17 States and two Union Territories in the Landslide Atlas of
India, prepared by ISRO's National Remote Sensing Centre in February 2023.
The atlas also ranked other Kerala districts like Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode highly
in terms of landslide vulnerability.
Rudraprayag in Uttaranchal topped the list, with the atlas focusing on landslide-prone areas in the
Western Ghats and Himalayan regions.
The vulnerability in the Western Ghats is exacerbated by high population and household density,
particularly in Kerala, despite fewer landslides compared to the Himalayan regions.
A report by the Comptroller and Auditor General of India highlighted significant forestland
fragmentation in Wayanad, noting a decrease from 1,811.35 sq km in 1950 to 863.86 sq km in 2021.
Average cost of data breach hit all-time high of ₹195 mn in 2024: IBM
The average cost of a data breach in India reached an all-time high of ₹195 million in 2024, as reported
by IBM in its annual Cost of a Data Breach Report.
Common initial attack types included phishing and stolen or compromised credentials, each
constituting 18% of incidents, followed by cloud misconfiguration at 12%.
Business email compromise emerged as the costliest cause of data breaches, averaging ₹215 million
per incident, with social engineering and phishing following closely at ₹213 million and ₹209 million
respectively.
Since 2020, breach costs have surged by 39%, and by 9% compared to the previous year, reflecting the
increasing disruption caused by breaches and the growing strain on cyber defense teams.
The primary drivers behind the cost increase in India were lost business and notification costs,
highlighting the escalating collateral damage from data breaches.
The Periyar Tiger Reserve (PTR) in Thekkady has innovatively installed a wind turbine to power real-
time monitoring cameras and Wi-Fi connectivity within its forests, enhancing conservation efforts and
communication.
This initiative addresses the challenge of limited mobile network connectivity in the reserve's East
Division, which comprises 17 forest sections previously dependent on solar power, hindered by the
region's foggy and rainy climate.
The newly installed 1-kilowatt wind turbine at Mangaladevi, a site known for strong winds, efficiently
charges batteries that sustain the operation of these cameras.
An antenna mounted on the wind turbine significantly improves internet connectivity, facilitating online
access for forest staff at three stations via a dedicated Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) line in
Thekkady.
The successful trial phase of the project has led to plans for expansion across other sections within PTR,
with the installation cost of the wind turbine reported at ₹2 lakh.
The Kerala State Forest Protective Staff Organisation (KSFPSO) has praised the initiative,
emphasizing the significant impact on the lives of forest officials who often experience isolation during their
duties, advocating for the rapid deployment of similar technology throughout PTR and other remote forest
areas in Kerala.
