We’re looking at painting the translucency of a sliced orange and continuing to develop our

skills at painting a white object which is much trickier than it sounds.

Set up a still life with a sliced orange a white jug and a white table cloth. Pay close attention to
the position of the light and shadows. I positioned my light above and slightly behind the
orange in order to enhance it’s translucent qualities. Your composition does not have to look
like mine – use your own judgement to create a pleasing composition. I took 2 hours to
arrange my still life, so take as much time as you need. Remember what you are really doing is
arranging abstract coloured shapes on a canvas into an interesting design.

Then using an extended palette of about 7 colours paint a still life in any medium and any size
and format. Use your artistic licence liberally and make a masterpiece!

How to take a great photo

1. Make sure you take the photo in the shade. Outside an open
garage with the painting facing inwards is ideal.
2. Try different locations to avoid glare. Move your head from side to Choose a file or drag it here.

4. Make sure the painting is in sharp focus.
5. The file should be no smaller than 500kb. 1-2mb is ideal.
6. The file should be a .jpg or .jpeg file. (it probably is already).
