GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

TECHNICAL DETAILS – GEOTECHNICAL INVESTIGATION

1. INTRODUCTION
For carrying out detail geotechnical investigations and laboratory testing in order to
understand the subsurface nature of soils and their engineering properties for Vichitra
Construction, New Delhi. This proposal contains the detail scope of work, methodology,
time schedule along with equipment and manpower to be deployed for this project.
2. OBJECTIVE
The Geotechnical investigation and laboratory testing on soil samples would be performed
to decide area-based development
In order to achieve the above objective, following engineering properties of the soil need to
be evaluated:
• Soil/Rock type and its engineering properties
• Depth of water table
• Chemical properties of sub-soil and sub-soil water
• Sub soil profile indicating thicknesses of various soil strata up to the desired depth.

3. SCOPE OF WORK:
Detail scope of work is as follows:
FIELD INVESTIGATION

a. Doing boreholes at five locations of 20 m depth

b. Collection of disturbed/undisturbed samples shall be done at given interval or change of
strata whichever is earlier shall be taken, in rock core samples to be taken and sored
c. SPT Tests would be conducted at given interval or at change of strata, whichever is
earlier.
d. Laboratory Test

4. METHOD FOR GEOTECHNICAL FIELD INVESTIGATION:

The field investigation conducted accordance with the Indian Standard code.
i. Drilling of boreholes would be performed in soil accordance with the provisions of IS:
1892, which deals mainly with subsurface investigations for foundations of civil structure
to determine,
a. Sequence and extent of each soil stratum in the region likely to be affected by the
proposed work.
b. Nature of each stratum and engineering properties of soil and rock which may
affect design and mode of construction of proposed structures and their
foundations, and
c. Location of ground water and possible corrosive effects of soil and water on
foundation materials.
ii. Standard penetration test:
The standard penetration test is performed accordance with the provision of IS: 2131-1981.
It is conducted by means of the split spoon sampler, specified in this standard, furnishes
data about resistance of soils for penetration, which is known as N values. The N values are
determined using 63.5 kg hammer freely falling from the height of 75 cm. In the beginning
the split spoon sampler resting on the bottom of borehole should be allowed to sink under
its own weight; then the split spoon sampler shall be seated 15 cm with the blows of the
hammer. Thereafter the split spoon sampler shall be further driven by 30 cm with a specific
number of blows. The first 15 cm of drive may be considered to be seating drive. The total
blows required for 30 cm of penetration shall be termed as the penetration resistance (N).
In case more than 100 blows are required to penetrate 30 cm, then it will be considered as
refusal. Generally the test would be made at every change in stratum or at interval of not
more than 1.5 m whichever is less. The N values are widely used for determining bearing
capacity (for cohesionless strata) and other important in-situ parameter of the sub-soil
strata. While preparing the report there are two corrections, which should be considered.
For cohesionless soil the N value should be corrected for overburden (N’) as per (Fig. 1) and
the dilatancy correction is applied on the corrected value, if the stratum consists of fine
sand and silt below water table for values of N’ greater than 15, as under N”

iii. Sampling: 2)

The samples for geotechnical lab investigations could be described as undisturbed soil
sample, disturbed sample and SPT samples. The disturbed samples will be collected from
trial pits to perform the required laboratory test. The undisturbed samples would be
collected accordance with IS 2132-1986, which describes the method for obtaining relatively
undisturbed soil samples suitable for laboratory tests. The strength parameters of soil will
be mainly determined on undisturbed soil samples; hence the care should be taken while
collecting the undisturbed samples. The sampling tube after collecting samples should be
properly labelled.
iv. Laboratory test:
Laboratory testing will be performed on collected samples from field for disturbed and
undisturbed soil samples. All the test would be performed accordance with the IS: 2720. The
detail procedure of each test is explained in the different part of this IS code for respective
soil test.
5. EQUIPMENTS TO BE DEPLOYED:
