EG 244 Assignment 2
EG 244 Assignment 2
Question 2
For alloys of two hypothetical metals A and B, there exists an α, A-rich phase and a β, B-rich phase. From the
mass fractions of both phases for two different alloys provided in the table below, (which are at the same
temperature), determine the composition of the phase boundary (or solubility limit) for both α and β phases at
this temperature.
Question 3
A 2.0-kg specimen of an 85 wt% Pb–15 wt% Sn alloy is heated to 200ºC; at this temperature, it is entirely an
α-phase solid solution. The alloy is to be melted to the extent that 50% of the specimen is liquid, the remainder
being the α-phase. This may be accomplished by heating the alloy or changing its composition while holding
the temperature constant.
i. To what temperature must the specimen be heated?
ii. How much tin must be added to the 2.0-kg specimen at 200ºC to achieve this state?

Question 4
a) Calculate the atomic fraction of copper in aluminium for a two-component alloy containing 5 wt. %
copper.
b) Determine the compositions and mass fractions of the liquid and solid phases for alloy X 0 in Figure
Fig. 3b at each of the five temperatures T1 through T5. Assume that the alloy is cooled under equilibrium
conditions.
