Relation is a function
Inverse not a function

The inverse of a function f is denoted by f -1 . You read it as

“the inverse of f “ or “f inverse”.
We use f(x) for functions, but the relation f -1 may or may
not be a function. How will we know if f -1 is a function?
Do the x’s repeat? For every x, only one y? Pass vertical line test?
Let’s explore One-to-One Functions
We know that to form an inverse, we switch the domain (the x’s)
and the range (the y’s).
f-1(x)
Domain Domain

Range Range

We also know that for a relation to be a function, the values in the

domain (the “x” values) cannot repeat.
If both the original function and its inverse are both functions, then
the functions are called One-to-One Functions.
Fun Fact: If the domain AND range, of the original function, do
not repeat, then it is automatically a One-to-One Function. This is
because the range of the original becomes the domain of the
inverse.
Horizontal Line Test
We can use the Horizontal Line Test on the original graph to determine if the
inverse is a function.
 We know that we can use the Vertical Line Test on the It is possible for a
original graph to determine if it is a function.

 What is the inverse of a vertical line??
vice versa.
✓ A horizontal line!!
 If the “x”s repeat on the original relation, then it is not a function.
Therefore, the Vertical Line Test would fail because the graph would
have two or more intersections for an “x” value.
 Since the “y”s of the original relation become the “x”s of the
inverse, it makes sense to look at the “y”s of the original relation for
repetition to determine if the inverse will be a function.
 For the Horizonal Line Test, we pass a horizontal line over the
original graph. If the graph only touches the horizontal line once at
each y value, then the inverse is a function!
