Matlab Assignment #2 Transport Phenomena 2023/2024

The macroscopic energy balance

Instructions and rules

- The assignment must be handed-in in the form of a report, along with a Matlab file. PDF
format is preferred, but docx is also accepted. Screenshots of hand-written operations pasted
into the report are not allowed. Please rename the files as per your group number.
- The report must incorporate all the information/equations/assumptions/simplifications/sketch
of the control volume used to solve the problem.
- Shall you have problems with Matlab, please contact the TA assigned to your group. The
person will help you with coding or debugging the script you have written.
- The deadline to hand-in the assignment is the 20th of December at 12pm. Use BrightSpace to
upload the files. Do not send them by email, nor with delay. Without a reasonable excuse, no
reports will be accepted after the deadline.
- The maximum number of points for this assignment is 10.
For major doubts or issues within the team, please contact Daniele Parisi [email protected].
Good Luck!
Problem
Water enters a 50 mm diameter thin-walled tube at 27 °C with a flow rate of 450 kg/h. The heat
transfer from the tube wall to the fluid is given as 𝑞𝑠′ (W/m) = ax, where the coefficient a is 20
W/m2 and x (m) is the axial distance from the tube entrance.
(a) Beginning with a properly defined differential control volume in the tube, derive an
expression for the temperature distribution Tm(x) of the water. 1point
(b) What is the outlet temperature of the water for a heated section 30 m long? 1point
(c) Plot the mean fluid temperature, Tm(x), and the tube wall temperature, Ts(x), as a function
of distance along the tube for fully developed and developing flow conditions. Assume a
convective coefficient h = 1000 W/m2K. 2points
(d) What value of a uniform wall heat flux, 𝑞𝑠" (instead of 𝑞𝑠′ = ax), would provide the same
fluid outlet temperature as that determined in part (b)? For this type of heating, plot the
temperature distributions requested in part (c). 2points
(e) Let us now assume that the tube has a nonnegligible thickness of 1 cm. The thermal
conductivity of the 316 stainless steel tube is 16.3 W/mK. The tube is now surrounded by a
fluid at T∞ = 80 °C with a ho = 5000 W/m2K. The internal convective coefficient can be assumed
as hi = 1000 W/m2K. Plot the temperature of water as a function of the tube axis (length). Hint:
consider the thermal resistance for cylindrical coordinates. 4points
