Regular polygons - If all the sides and interior angles of the polygons are
equal, they are known as regular polygons. The examples of regular polygons
are square, rhombus, equilateral triangle, etc.

In regular polygons, not only the sides are congruent but angles are too. That
means, they are equiangular.

Properties of Regular polygons

Some of the properties of regular polygons are listed below.

 All the sides of a regular polygon are equal

 All the interior angles are equal
 The perimeter of a regular polygon with n sides is equal to the n times of a side measure.
 The sum of all the interior angles of a simple n-gon or regular polygon = (n − 2) × 180°
 The number of diagonals in a polygon with n sides = n(n – 3)/2
 The number of triangles formed by joining the diagonals from one corner of a polygon = n
–2
 The measure of each interior angle of n-sided regular polygon = [(n – 2) × 180°]/n
 The measure of each exterior angle of an n-sided regular polygon = 360°/n

Irregular polygons - are polygons that do not have equal sides and equal
angles.

Common examples of irregular polygons are a scalene triangle, kite, rectangle.

Properties of Irregular Polygons

Let’s see some properties of irregular polygons.

 First, a regular polygon has equal sides and equal angles. If the
polygon fails to meet one of these two conditions, it becomes an
irregular polygon.
 Second, there are irregular polygons having equal sides but
unequal angles and vice versa.
 In the figure shown below, the shape is a rhombus. Is a rhombus
a polygon? Yes, because it is a closed figure made of four line
segments. A rhombus is an irregular polygon with equal sides
and unequal angles. Its opposite angles are equal but all angles
do not have the same measure.

Subject Integration:

Biology:

Irregular polygons can represent the shapes of biological structures such as cells,
leaves, or animal territories. For example:

 Cell Shapes: Irregular polygons can represent the irregular shapes of cells,
which often adapt to their function and environment. The irregular shape of
a cell can affect its surface area-to-volume ratio, influencing nutrient
absorption and waste removal efficiency.
 Animal Territories: Territories of animals in the wild are often irregular in
shape due to geographical features and competitive interactions. Studying
irregular polygons helps in understanding spatial behaviors and resource
utilization among animals.
