A. Write each fraction in decimals, then draw the corresponding representation using a circle or
rectangle,
1. 3 3. 2 5. 4 7. 7
5 3 8 12

2. 5 4. 7 6. 4 8. 5
6 10 5 8

B. Answer each of the following.

1. Let the fraction be x/y; x – 4 = 4, x = 8 The original fraction is 8/13.
y – 4 = 9, y = 13
2. If the fraction is x/y, x + y = 39. x – y = 15. Solving gives 2x = 54, x = 27. 27 – y = 15. y = 12.
The fraction is 27/12.
3. Let the fraction be x/y. y – x = 7. y = x + 7, x + y = 17. Solving, gives 2y = 24, y = 12 and x = 5.
The fraction is 5/12.
4. If the fraction is x/y, xy = 54. y – x = 3. Solving gives (y – 3)y = y2 – 3y = 54. (y – 9)(y + 3) = 0. y = 9
and x = 9 – 3 = 6. The fraction is 6/9.
5. xy = 96, x is a multiple of 3; y is a multiple of 4, x < y and xy = 96. Find two factors of 96 such that
one is multiple of 3 and the other is a multiple of 4. 96 = 8 x 12 = 4 x 24 = 6 x 16. Only 6 x 16 satisfies
all the conditions. So, the fraction is 6/16.
6. It is given that x + y = 18, y – x = 4, x and y are both odd numbers. So, look for two addends of 18
such that both are odd numbers and differ by 4. Both odd addends of 18 are 1 and 17, 3 and 15,
5 and 13, 7 and 11, 9 and 9. Only the pair 7 and 11 satisfy the other condition – that they differ
by 4. So, the fraction is 7/11.
