Research Methodology/ Instrumentation

Research Topic: Relationship between Teachers' Feedback and

Students' Self-Efficacy and Motivation in Private Sector Schools of
Kotli, Azad Kashmir

1. Methodology

This research aims to explore the relationship between teachers' feedback

and students' self-efficacy and motivation in private sector schools in Kotli,
Azad Kashmir. The study will use a mixed-method approach, incorporating
both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods.

 Approach: A mixed-method approach will be utilized to gain a

comprehensive understanding of how teachers' feedback impacts
students' self-efficacy and motivation.
 Rationale: The mixed-method approach is chosen to provide both
measurable data through surveys and in-depth insights through
interviews. This combination will allow for a more nuanced
understanding of the relationship between feedback and student
outcomes.

2. Design

The research design will be correlational, aiming to identify and analyze the
relationships between teachers' feedback and the dependent variables of
self-efficacy and motivation among students.

 Type of Design: Correlational design.

 Rationale: This design is appropriate because it allows the researcher
to examine the strength and direction of relationships between
teachers' feedback and students' psychological attributes without
manipulating any variables.

3. Research Method

The study will combine quantitative and qualitative methods to gather data.

 Quantitative Aspect: Surveys will be administered to students to

measure their levels of self-efficacy and motivation.
 Qualitative Aspect: Semi-structured interviews will be conducted
with teachers to explore their feedback strategies and perceived
impacts on students.
 Rationale: This method allows for a detailed analysis, with
quantitative data providing statistical evidence and qualitative data
offering contextual understanding.

4. Population

The study will focus on students and teachers in private sector schools in
Kotli, Azad Kashmir.

 Target Population: Students in grades 8 to 10 and their respective

teachers.
 Students: These grades are selected because students are in a critical
developmental stage where feedback can significantly impact their
academic self-efficacy and motivation.
 Teachers: Teachers who provide direct feedback to these students will
be included, as their practices are central to the study.

5. Sampling Technique

Stratified random sampling will be used to ensure a representative sample

across different schools and grade levels.

 Sampling Method: Stratified random sampling.

 Rationale: This technique ensures that subgroups within the
population (e.g., different schools or grade levels) are adequately
represented in the sample, which helps in generalizing the findings to
the broader population.

6. Sample Size

The sample size will include 150 students and 20 teachers.

 Students: 150 students will be surveyed to ensure sufficient data for

statistical analysis.
 Teachers: 20 teachers will be interviewed to provide qualitative
insights into their feedback practices.
 Rationale: The sample size is determined based on the population
size and the need for statistical significance in the quantitative
analysis, as well as manageability for the qualitative interviews.

7. Instrumentation
The instruments for data collection will include standardized scales and
custom surveys.

 Quantitative Instruments:
o General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES): This scale will measure
students' beliefs in their ability to achieve academic goals.
o Motivation Scale: An adapted version of an educational
motivation scale will be used to assess students' motivation
levels.
o Feedback Perception Survey: A custom survey will be
developed to measure students' perceptions of the feedback
they receive from teachers.
 Qualitative Instruments:
o Interview Guide: A semi-structured interview guide will be used
to explore teachers' feedback practices and their perceptions of
its impact on students.

8. Validity and Reliability

Ensuring the validity and reliability of the instruments is critical for the
credibility of the research findings.

 Validity:
o Content Validity: The survey instruments will be reviewed by
experts in educational psychology to ensure they adequately
cover the concepts of self-efficacy, motivation, and feedback.
o Pilot Testing: A pilot study will be conducted with a small
subset of the sample to test the instruments' effectiveness and
make necessary adjustments.
 Reliability:
o Cronbach’s Alpha: The reliability of the scales (e.g., GSES and
Motivation Scale) will be assessed using Cronbach’s alpha to
ensure internal consistency.
o Inter-rater Reliability: For qualitative data, inter-rater
reliability will be established by having multiple coders analyze
the interview transcripts to ensure consistency in coding and
interpretation.

9. Time Frame

A detailed timeline will guide the research process, ensuring that each phase
is completed efficiently.

 Preparation (1 month):
o Develop and pilot test instruments.
o Obtain ethical approvals and permissions from schools.
 Data Collection (2 months):
o Distribute surveys to students and collect completed forms.
o Conduct interviews with teachers and transcribe the data.
 Data Analysis (1 month):
o Quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical software to
identify correlations between feedback and the dependent
variables.
o Qualitative data will be analyzed using thematic analysis to
identify key themes related to feedback practices.
 Report Writing (1 month):
o Compile the findings from both quantitative and qualitative data.
o Write the thesis, ensuring that all sections are cohesive and well-
organized.
 Final Review and Submission (2 weeks):
o Review the thesis with the supervisor, make any necessary
revisions, and prepare the final submission.
