One to One Function

The term one to one relationship actually refers to

relationships between any two items in which one
can only belong with only one other item. In a
mathematical sense, these relationships can be
referred to as one to one functions, in which there
are equal numbers of items, or one item can only be
paired with only one other item. The name of a
person and the reserved seat number of that person
in a train is a simple daily life example of one to one
function.
Inverse Function Defined
The inverse of a function is a function with domain B
and range A given that the original function has domain
A and range B. This inverse function of function f is
−1
denoted by 𝑓 . It is defined by the equation
𝑓 −1 𝑥 = 𝑦 if and only if 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑦 for any y in range B.
Since both are functions, then a function has to be one-
to-one for its inverse to be a function at the same time.
If it is a many-to-one function, its inverse is one-to-
many which is not a function
How to Find the Inverse of One-to-one
Function
Intuitively, the inverse of a function may be
known by the principle of “undo”. That is, by
considering the inverse of operations
performed, the inverse of a function may be
computed easily.
To find the inverse of a one-to-one function, consider the
following:
a. Write the function in the form y=f(x);
b. Solve for x in terms of y;
−1
c. Replace x by 𝑓 (x) and replace y as x;
−1
d. Verify if f and 𝑓 (𝑥) are inverse
functions.
Example 1
Given f(x) = 3x – 8, the inverse of a function may be
solved intuitively.
STEPS IN SYMBOLS

Step 1. The last operation performed is_____, the

inverse operation of which is _______. To x, add x+8
_____.
Step 2. The second to the last operation performed
𝐱+𝟖
is_______, the inverse operation of which is _____.
Divide x + 8 by ____. 𝟑
𝐱 + 𝟖
Step 3. Equate it to 𝑓 −1 𝑥 to denote that it is the 𝒇−𝟏 =
inverse function of 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 – 8. 𝟑
Intuitively, give the inverse function of each of
the following.
FUNCTION INVERSE FUNCTION

f(𝑥) = 𝑥 + 2 𝑓 −1 𝑥 =𝑥−2
𝑔(𝑥) = 12𝑥 − 1 𝑥+1
𝑔−1 𝑥 =

ℎ(𝑥) = ℎ−1 𝑥 = −4𝑥

𝑓(𝑥) = x 𝑓 −1
𝑥 =𝑥
I. Write True before the number if the statement
is true and False if it is false.
True
__________(a) A linear function is a one-to-one
function.
False 1
__________(b) The inverse of 𝑦 = is 𝑦 = 𝑥.
𝑥
True
__________(c) The graph of the inverse of a
function can be obtained by reflecting the graph
of the function along 𝑦 = 𝑥.
True
__________(d) Function is a set of ordered
pairs in which no two ordered pairs that have
the same first component have different
second components.
False
_________(e) When working on the coordinate
plane, a function is a one-to-one function when
it will pass the horizontal line test (to make it a
function) and also a vertical line test (to make it
one-to-one).
Find the inverse of the function:

f x = 7𝑥 + 4
−1 𝑥−4
Answer: 𝑓 𝑥 =
7
Complete the table of each given function:
1.) f(x)=5x-20
x -2 0 2 4 6
f(x)
𝑥
2.) 𝑓 𝑥 = 4 +
5
x -30 -20 -10 0 10
f(x)
This means that the domain of the inverse is
the range of the original function and that the
range of the inverse is the domain of the
original function.
Ways in finding the domain and range
•Exclude from the domain any input values
that result in division by zero.
•Exclude from the domain any input values
that have nonreal (imaginary) number
outputs
•Exclude from the domain any input values
that can lead to the function not being one-
to-one.
•Use the valid input values to determine the
range of the output values.
