Problem 12–03

A journal bearing has a journal diameter of 3.000 , with a unilateral tolerance of -0.001 in. The
bushing bore has a diameter of 3.005 and a unilateral tolerance of 0.004 . The bush-ing is 1.5 in
long. The journal speed is 600 / and the load is 800 . For both 10 and 40,
lubricants, find the minimum film thickness and the maximum film pressure for an operating
temperature of 150° for the minimum clearance assembly.

Solution:
The dimension is the radial clearance and is the difference in the radii
of the bushing bore diameter and the shaft journal diameter as Given:
in Figure 12-6 (page 616): 3.000
3.005 3.000 3.005
