Within the frame of future business for new operator entrants, radio technology plays
an important role. It ensures fast and therefore economic deployment of networks with
a variety of possible services of different service qualities. An artist view of a typical
point-to-multipoint scenario is shown in the following figure.

Figure 1: 7\SLFDO3RLQWWR0XOWLSRLQW6FHQDULRXVLQJWKH'066\VWHP

Radio technology for last mile access up to now has been limited mainly to low serv-
ice quality (low data rates). This is due to the fact, that most of the system solutions
have been derived from mobile cellular technologies. Despite the fact, that these so-
lutions often are able to offer open air interface standards and subsequently lead to a
very low cost terminal equipment, they are limited in terms of transmission of higher
service quality (i.e. higher data rates). This is mainly based upon the radio technolo-
gies used which are optimised for mobile environments and due to the utilisation of
lower frequency ranges which are necessary to maintain the mobility features in an
economic way. Furthermore, cellular systems are optimised towards simple and eco-
nomic user terminal equipment which is available on an open market and which is di-
rectly bought by the end user.

Executive Summary

To overcome these difficulties and to offer optimised solutions for a broadband net-
work approach, new microwave point-to-multipoint technologies have been developed
and are currently tested in several field trials world wide. These systems are specially
optimised as full network products (i.e. including full network management supervi-
sion) and the air interface has been chosen according to the compatibility with higher
user data rates. Thanks to the utilisation of microwave and millimetric frequency
bands the corresponding frequency resources are available, nevertheless, also in
these cases a high spectrum efficiency is needed.

The'06 'LJLWDO0XOWLSRLQW6\VWHP 6HULHVby BOSCH Telecom represents a novel

approach to highly flexible and future-proof fixed radio access applications and offers
a broad variety of services already within the first generation. Clear indication is given
concerning possible future enhancements both in terms of adaptability to different ra-
dio frequency ranges and future enhancements in terms of service variety and evolu-
tion of user bandwidth performance. The evolution concept of the DMS system is
shown in the following figure.

Executive Summary

The system architecture is based on a common approach for the service dependent
features (services, user and network interfaces, network management, planning tools)
and can be extended by independent radio units to be adapted to various frequency
band allocations and specific national and international regulations. The first genera-
tion of products is based on FDMA/DBA (frequency division multiple access with dy-
namic bandwidth allocation "in the air") and well positioned for the typical small and
medium business application. Currently, in the frame of a second generation, the
system architecture is extended also towards economical applications for the residen-
tial customer by using W-CDMA (wide band code division multiple access) and to-
wards the American based broadband LMDS (local multipoint distribution system)
market in different frequency bands. The third generation will comprise an ATM
(asynchronous transfer mode) platform and a SDMA (space division multiple access)
subsystem in order to further increase the system capacity, if needed. In parallel, the
corresponding system software is being developed, providing the basic system fea-
tures in different releases as well as offering the corresponding network management
on element and network level and planning tools for enhanced radio cell planning for
even more optimising the area capacity. The system is prepared to be even further
enhanced by the so-called OIM (online interference management) system for auto-
mated frequency planning.

The DMS radio access system is a novel development featuring a very flexible system
architecture with concerning the adaptability to various frequency ranges. Currently,
the following system versions are available or in development or planned:

General design aspects of broadband radio access systems are discussed in [AD1]
focusing on new system requirements such as full access network integration,
broadband transmission capacities, high transmission quality and spectrum efficiency
as well as inherent security. The corresponding technical solution shows, that with a
careful system optimisation innovative solutions can be found.

A second generation of fixed radio access point-to-multipoint systems will be pre-

sented offering new and enhanced features such as FDMA/DBA, but also taking into
consideration new development solutions using CDMA technologies, as well as ad-
vanced microwave and antenna technologies. The seamless integration of these new
radio technologies into modern access network concepts leads to extremely flexible
solutions for almost any service scenario. The general technical scope of the DMS
system is shown in the following figure.

nance via a common network management approach. A local mobility feature may be
added by combining the system e.g. with a DECT subsystem.

As long as fixed radio access systems are considered, no compromise concerning the
transmission quality and security in comparison to a wireline network can be ac-
cepted.

These features together with high system capacities and spectrum efficiencies are
possible using advanced modulation and coding concepts. Limited spectrum avail-
ability in the future can be overcome by additionally using even more enhanced
source coding schemes than today. These possibilities ensure the competitiveness of
radio technologies also for the future.

The general description of the Open NSÜ for DMS network management function is
described in [AD2].
