Notetaking example

Cornell Method
This method is designed as a ‘Do it right the first time’ system of notetaking. This
system supports the 5 R’s of notetaking. See ‘Method’ below to find out how to use
this system.

Recall Record
1 Page layout:
How do you set it up? • Header – lecture topic; date; name of lecturer
• 3 columns – Record, Recall, Review

2 Method: supports 5 R’s of notetaking:


How do you use it? 1. Record – during lecture/reading; use main (Record) column;
5 R’s of notetaking wr. legibly; use any method – words, pictures, graphs, etc.

2. Recall – soon after lecture; in LH column; note


a. key/cue words
b. phrases
c. questions

3. Recite – talk aloud! – cover ‘Record’; use ‘Recall’ key words &
questions as prompts; recite facts & ideas of lecture in own
words

4. Reflect – think over; ask questions – How does it relate to


what I knew before; how does it fit with the ‘big picture’

5. Review – wr. a summary in ‘Review’ space; review 10 mins ea


wk to retain info; use during exam revision

Review
Cornell uses 3 columns; supports 5 R’s of notetaking. Record space for lecture & addit. notes; any
method. After class use other spaces for recall words/questions and summary. Leave opposite
page blank. Establishes study routine; prompts thinking; assists recall; effective; time saving.
