FIZ 101E Suggested Questions/Chapter 1

Question Q1.10:
Is the vector (î + ĵ + k̂) a unit vector? Is the vector (3.0î − 2.0ĵ) a unit vector? Justify your answers.

Question 1.39:
(a) Write each vector shown in the figure in terms of the unit vectors î and ĵ. (b)
⃗ where C
Use unit vectors to express C, ⃗ = 3.00A⃗ − 4.00B⃗ (c) Find the magnitude

and direction of C.

Question 1.41:
Given two vectors A⃗ = −2.00î + 3.00ĵ + 4.00k̂ and B
⃗ = 3.00î + 1.00ĵ − 3.00k̂, (a) find the magnitude of
each vector; (b) use unit vectors to write an expression for the vector difference A ⃗ − B;⃗ and (c) find the
magnitude of the vector difference A⃗ − B.
⃗ Is this the same as the magnitude of B ⃗ − A?⃗ Explain.

Question 1.42, 1.44:

Given two vectors A ⃗ = 4.00î + 7.00ĵ and B
⃗ = 5.00î − 2.00ĵ, (a) Find the scalar product of the vectors
⃗ and B,
A ⃗ (b) Find the angle between these two vectors (c) Find the vector product A ⃗ ×B⃗ (expressed in
unit vectors) of the two vectors, (d) What is the magnitude of the vector product?

Question 1.49:
Recall that density is mass divided by volume, and consult Appendix B of your book as needed. (a)
Calculate the average density of the earth in g/cm3 , assuming our planet is a perfect sphere. (b) In about
5 billion years, at the end of its lifetime, our sun will end up as a white dwarf that has about the same
mass as it does now but is reduced to about 15 000 km in diameter. What will be its density at that stage?
(c) A neutron star is the remnant of certain supernovae (explosions of giant stars). Typically, neutron
stars are about 20 km in diameter and have about the same mass as our sun. What is a typical neutron
star density in g/cm3 ?

Question 1.80:
A cube is placed so that one corner is at the origin and three edges are along the x-,
y-, and z-axes of a coordinate system (see the figure). Use vectors to compute (a) the
angle between the edge along the z-axis (line ab) and the diagonal from the origin to
the opposite corner (line ad), and (b) the angle between line ac (the diagonal of a face)
and line ad.

Question 1.84:
⃗ and B
Two vectors A ⃗ have magnitudes A = 3.00 and B = 3.00. Their vector product is A×
⃗ B⃗ = −5.00k̂+2.00î.
⃗ and B?
What is the angle between A ⃗

Question 1.85:
⃗ = 5.0î − 6.5ĵ and B
You are given vectors A ⃗ = 3.5î − 7.0ĵ. A third vector, C,
⃗ lies in the xy-plane. Vector
⃗ is perpendicular to vector A,
C ⃗ and the scalar product of C ⃗ with B⃗ is 15.0. From this information, find

the components of vector C.
