5.1 Using scales
1 Abigail is making scale drawings of a triangle.
The sides of triangle A are 50 cm, 120 cm and 130 cm.
The angle between the 50 cm side and the 120 cm side is 90°.

a Triangle B is a scale drawing of triangle A at a scale of 1 cm : 10 cm.

What is the area of triangle B?

.......................

b How many times greater is the area of triangle A than the area of triangle B?

.......................

c Triangle C is a larger scale drawing of triangle A at a scale of 1 m : 1 cm.

How many times greater is the area of triangle C than the area of triangle A?

.......................

d What is the scale factor from triangle B to triangle C?

Write your answer as a ratio.

.......................

e Joe says, ‘the size of the angles will be bigger on triangle C because of the
scale factor’. Explain why Joe is incorrect.

2 A map has scale of 1 : 25 000.

Ava says, ‘This means that 1 cm on the map represents 25 000 cm in real life.’
Chris says, ‘This means that 1 mm on the map represents 25 000 mm in real life.’
