Problem 2

A heavy machine weighing 9,810 N is being lowered vertically down by a winch at a uniform
velocity of 2 m/s. The steel cable supporting the machine has a diameter of 0.01 m. The winch is
suddenly stopped when the steel cable’s length is 20 m. Find the period and amplitude of the
ensuing vibration of the machine.

Problem 3

The figure shows a three-stepped shaft fixed at one end and subjected to a torsional moment T at
the other end. The length of step i is 𝑙𝑖 and its diameter is 𝐷𝑖 for 𝑖 = 1, 2, 3. All the steps are
made of the same material with shear modulus 𝐺𝑖 = 𝐺. Find the equivalent torsional spring
constant (or stiffness) of the stepped shaft 𝑘𝑡 𝑒𝑞 , so that 𝑇 = 𝑘𝑡𝑒𝑞 𝜃. Are the steppes behaving as
series or parallel torsional springs?
