ACEMOWEEDclEMENT

Though captioned 'Acknowledgment ', may I submit that the

following is my gratitudinal remembrance of all who have
contributed substantially to the successful completion of
this thesis.

The thesis is a tribute to the able guidance of my Research

Advisor, Dr O P Saxena, who was principally responsible in
the first place for motivating me to undertake the research
project. That I could freely discuss and debate with him
teeny-weeny details even of my research problem is a
reflection of the understanding and scholarship I was
fortunate to avail of.

Not even once in the entire period of my research work could

I crib about any aspect of the lab facilities! And the
credit for this truly belongs to Prof A B Vora, the head of
the Botany Department, Gujarat University.

On the lab side my fellow-researchers, as also a number of

professional colleagues, both within and without the Gujarat
University, have gladly chipped in with their bits in my
research endeavour. In particular, I would like to mention
my colleague, mentor and husband Hr Ashvin Thanki for the
fountainhead of support, moral and otherwise, that he has
been to me all along.

I also would like to thank Dr S C Nigam and Dr A B Karnik,

of the National Institute of Occupational Health, Ahmedabad,
for granting me access to their scanning facility.

The monetary support of the Merit Scholarship granted by the

Government of Gujarat was to me also a source of academic
incentive.

Personally, I feel that I could not possibly have been

through with my research work without the blessings and
cooperation of my parents, parents-in-law and other family
members.
