Activating Prior Knowledge Pre-Reading Proper


(3 minutes)
“Find-My-Partner”
(Teacher shows picture to the class)
Teacher: Good morning, class! I’m sure all of you are eager to learn something new
today, just by looking at your happy faces. Let us have a recap of your previous
lesson in forming new words. From this single picture you will pair it with another
single picture to come up with a new word. Then you relate the word to an activity
you have done with family and friends.

(Teacher distributes the single picture cards to the pupils).

You start now to find for your partner.

(Allow learners a few minutes to find their partner and talk an experience related to
the word they have formed).

Teacher: (After a few minutes) Hello, time is up now! Let us try to hear your
answers. What words did you come up from the paired picture? What do you call
combined words?
What activity can you relate with your words? Did you find the activity easy? Why?

Learners Possible Responses:

“We paired rice and field and the new word formed is rice field.”
“We call these words compound words”.

Teacher: Say something about these pictures. This is about the passage we are
going to read later. Did you experience having these activities with your family or
friends? When did you do these activities? Did you learn a lesson from these

Teacher: That’s great! In our lesson for today, we expect you to learn more about
compound words. This will be our WALTS for today. This stands for We Are Learning

1. Infer meaning of compound words through context clues;
2. Note important details of the passage; and
3. Explain ways for respect of life.

Teacher: Your prior knowledge to form new words and relate to an experience is
related to our topic for today; to infer meaning of compound words using context
clues. Take note of important details the in the story we will read. You can relate it to
your own
experiences. It’s exciting, right?

Lesson Language Practice VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT


(10 minutes)
Teacher: Before we proceed with our passage reading, let us first have a quick scan
for words unfamiliar to you. Let us study for a better understanding of the story.
(Teacher flashes the story on the slide deck. Pupils will tell words unfamiliar to them.
Teacher writes them on the board)

Learners’ Possible Responses: rice field, seashore, haystack, pathway, scarecrow.

1. rice field
Can anyone tell what rice field means based on the sentence? The field was
glistening under the sun with the palay ready for harvest.
(Encourage pupils to share their ideas).

Learners: It is a field planted with palay.

Teacher: That’s right! It is a field with palay plantation.

2. seashore
What word may have the same meaning with seashore?

The seashore, also known as the shoreline, was a beautiful sight with rolling waves
against the sand.

Learners: It is the shoreline.

Teacher: Yes, that’s right. Shoreline has the same meaning with seashore.

3. haystack
What description of the word can help you find what the word means?

The farmer searched through the haystack; a large pile of dried grass shaped like a
cone used for feeding animals, to find the lost rake.

(Give a short time for the children to say something about the pictures then ask them
the questions).

(Give time to few pupils to share their ideas)

Learners: A haystack is s pile of dried grass in cone like form.

4. pathway
What opposite word may help you know what pathway mean?
The pathway leading to the cornfields was narrow in contrast to the highway that
had three lanes just a few miles away.

Learners: The opposite word to pathway which is a narrow lane is highway having
three lanes.

5. scarecrow.
The scarecrow, a tall stick figure with straw hair and mismatched clothing stood in
the rice field, its arms outstretched as if warding off hungry birds.

Learners: A scarecrow is a stick tall figure with straw hair and mismatched clothing.

Teacher: Impressive! You did a good job in unlocking the unfamiliar words.

Reading the Main Passage DURING THE READING LESSON

FIRST READING OF THE STORY BY THE TEACHER

Teacher: Our story today is a reminder for all of us to have a break from our usual
leisure activity from texting, gaming and watching videos or movies to healthy
activities to help us find strength during difficult times.

I will first read the story to you, listen carefully and follow along in your copy of the
story. Take note of the important details for your answers to the following guide
questions for discussion later.

1. With family and friends, what activities can you do to make your mind and body
rest on weekends and during summer vacation?
2. What did you learn from the passage about taking nature trips?
3. What makes nature trip healthier and more educational?
4. Should we take time to spend short trips to the beach or nearby farms? Why?
5. What health practices should be observed during nature trips?
6. How can we help build a healthier and more peaceful world to live in?
(Teacher begins to read the passage aloud.)

NATURE TRIP
Integration of Health Education Concepts
A trip to the beach and countryside offers a healthy, enjoyable, and educational
experience. Spending time in nature provides stress relief and relaxation, promoting
overall well-being.

Walking with the family along the seashore, playing ball or racing barefoot with
friends and shouting with glee under the warmth of morning sunlight brings feeling of
joy. Then you sit together to eat those nutritious food your mother has prepared; as
she has in her mind to avoid any stomach trouble for any of her family. She sees to it
that the food they bring along are nutritious, not just junk foods or street foods.
Washing hands properly and
praying before meals are practiced not only at home but also during nature trips.
These practices build a stronger bond of love and care.

Going to the beach is educational too, when you curiously observe seashells,
pebbles, and driftwoods, you learn about the natural world around you. You get to
Integration of Values and Peace Education feel the fresh sea breeze, it washes your pains and troubles away. It’s so refreshing!
Concepts
You can find a similar sense of wonder on a farm visit. Walking along the pathway to
the muddy rice field, you shout with surprise when a frog leaps on your feet, then
bees hum over your head. How you love to see the colorful rainbow and the fragile
wings of butterflies!

At break time, you sit under the shade of a coconut tree to eat the newly harvested
fruits that have been washed from the nearby well properly covered to avoid
contamination from pesticides during spray time. It’s a lesson worth learning for you,
too.

Learning how a simple scarecrow can protect the rice field from birds, listening to the
cackling hens and croaking frogs seems the music in the farm. This brings a deeper
love and respect for nature in you.

All these short experiences and encounter with nature remind us of the importance of
health, care, and safety for our environment. They also strengthen our bonds with
family and friends, fostering love, respect, and friendship.

Let's make time with nature, away from our devices, to experience these gifts. In
return, let's help to raise the awareness the importance of restoring the beauty of
nature by planting trees. Let us appreciate the animals, birds even the insects in the
farm without disturbing them. Let us help one another dispose garbage properly from
the wrappers of foods we brought along in these trips. This is one way can prevent
the spread of diseases be it at the farm or at the beach for healthy, and safe world
for all.

Teacher: Now I would like someone to volunteer read the passage aloud to the class.
After reading, we should be ready to give our answers to the questions shown to us
earlier.

Teacher: Now let’s try to see how well you understood the passage and took note of
its important details. Let’s bring back the questions shown to us earlier and let’s
answer them one by one. May I remind you to state your answers in complete

 We can build a more peaceful world if we build strong family ties like; we show

respect and follow rules set in particular public places.
 To our community we can help in the proper disposal and segregation of
garbage, so that spread of diseases will be prevented.

 Help maintain our surroundings clean at home, school, and everywhere.

 Let us also remember to refrain from giving harm to animals, and even insects
because they are helpful in someways during pollination of plants.

Here is a strategy we can use to infer or guess these unfamiliar compound words by
using the strategy context clues where there will be no need to open a dictionary.

Teacher: Earlier in our lesson I asked you to find for unfamiliar compound words in
the story. Recall how you were able to infer or give the meaning of the new word. You
related it to an experience you’ve had so you can give its meaning. Did you find the
activity interesting?

We say compound words or compounds are words formed by putting two or more
words together to form a new word with a new meaning. To understand the meaning
of the compound, it is important to determine the meaning of each word.

Compound words may be closed, open, or hyphenated.

Teacher: This time I will group you into three groups. You are going to fill in the
chart based on the sentences below the needed information. This activity is good for
5 minutes only. Before we begin with the activity, let us agree first on the rubrics for
the point system.

Teacher: Your great group presentations a while back mean you’ve demonstrated a
solid understanding of context clues to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words. Now,
to wrap up our lesson, let’s do Quick Write. Write down in your notebook your key
takeaways by answering the following questions. Share your answers afterwards to
the class.

Teacher: What are context clues?


Learner: Context clues are hints or pieces of information within a text that help
readers determine the meaning of unfamiliar words.
Teacher: Correct! Where can we find these clues?
Learner: These clues can be found in the sentences surrounding the unknown or
unfamiliar word.

Teacher: What are the different types of context clues?


Learner: They can take various forms, such as synonyms, antonyms, definitions,
examples or word parts.

Teacher: Excellent! Why is learning to apply context clues important for you?
Learner: Context clues are important for me because they can help me infer the
meaning of a word without having to look it up in a dictionary.

Teacher: Very well said! Can we use the skill of inferring the meaning of compound
words using context clues to maintain peace in a particular place. In the first place,
what are compound words and what are the three ways of forming them?
Learner: We can form compound words by forming them as closed, open and
hyphenated compound words.
Example: This is a Smoke-Free area.

Teacher: From this particular example, you will become aware what the poster
means. How will you show respect for nature and respect for life from the poster
shown?
Learner: The poster means that in this particular place nobody is allowed to smoke
to create a healthy place for everyone. If everybody respects and follow this rule
there will be peace and understanding in the community, that is the people and the
government
authorities help together in building a healthy and safe environment.

Teacher: It is important that you know context clues strategy skill because it helps
you understand the meaning of unfamiliar words without the need to look them up in
the dictionary all the time. Keep practicing this skill whenever you read, and it will
become

concepts in your own reading and writing as well.
