Some Personal Statement
for various reasons. I think my passion for this field started when I was a kid. I first got to enroll
in an ICT class when I was in grade 3. That was also my first time working with a computer. I
got to work with the basics of office software, but what intrigued me was when I got to work
with the Turtle software. It is a graphic software that allows you to graph various shapes based
on the command inputs. I learned that you can write loops for the turtle to repeat a command,
therefore shortening the coding process substantially. I wrote my first loop for the software to
draw a full circle that is made up of various lines rotating from the center. I enjoyed it when I
saw the code run smoothly and my desired shape was shown on the screen. As much as I enjoyed
learning computer science, I didn’t have any time to learn this subject in middle school as my
school didn’t offer this subject. Still, the passion for this field stayed active inside me, and I
continued to do my studying for the 3 years in middle school. I have no guidance, so I did not
make so much progress. Still, I managed to learn some basics of Python, a practical yet useful
programming language. This period was more of a playtest period for me. I tried some projects
that I found on the Internet, and they showed me the limitless capacity of the programming job.
These projects influenced me to choose computer science as my main study track for high
school.
When I enrolled in high school, I didn’t have a plan for my future. I still loved computer
science, but I did like science at the same time. The thought of choosing an actual career didn’t
bother me in my freshman year and most of my sophomore year. It was only in the summer
before my junior year when I had to pick the subjects for my coming school year that I became
worried. I was wondering what would be my best option, and my initial thought was to go with a
business course. However, the school counselor suggested that I should go with the computer
science course. She suggested so as I was good in math and I did have a passion for the subject. I
am glad that I decided to take her advice as enjoy learning at the moment. The course that I am
currently taking is mainly about Python programming and AI/robotics. It is very practical and
highly demanded in the current job market as the field of AI development is having a dynamic
leap. I once had a project on the topic of data analysis where I used Panda (a Python package). In
this project, I used the package to analyze stock price change, which could therefore be used for
future stock price prediction. While it took a lot of additional research for me to understand the
project, it turned out to be extremely useful if it was developed to work on a bigger scale. Later
that year, I had another project on controlling a drone through Python. The drone that I was
working with was a TELLO drone, which had a Python package that supported controlling it
from a computer instead of a traditional controller. While it was not very efficient to control the
drone using a computer, this project helped me realize that programming is very versatile and
useful. I still try to find more practical projects to work on both in my class time and my free
time. By doing these projects, I can practice my skills as well as expand my knowledge base.
