SAE J2485 Issued JAN2003
3.3.3 THREAD TYPES AND FITS—Thread types and fits shall be restricted to those identified herein and permitted in
the applicable dimensional standard. Threads, tolerances, allowances for plating, and gauging shall be in
accordance with ASME B18.6.3 for inch machine screw nuts and ASME B18.2.4.1M for metric machine
screw nuts. The threads on inch size nuts shall be Unified Standard Class 2B in accordance with ASME
B1.1. For metric nuts, threads shall be metric coarse series Class 6H conforming to ASME B1.13M. Thread
acceptance shall be based on ASME B1.3M System 21.
3.4 Coating Requirements—Coatings shall be limited to those identified herein. Coatings are recommended for
the medium carbon steels for corrosion protection. The applicable coating shall be designated in the part
identification number as indicated in Figure 1B. While not normally recommended, the black oxide coating can
be specified for materials other than carbon steels where a shiny natural appearance must be avoided.
3.4.1 ELECTRO- DEPO SITED CO ATINGS—Electro-deposited coatings shall be in accordance with ASTM F 1941 for
inch dimensioned nuts and ASTM F 1941M for metric nuts as provided herein. The minimum coating
thickness shall be one-sixth the pitch diameter allowance as identified in the applicable coating document or
ASME B1.1 or B1.13M as applicable. Low coating thickness impairs chromate adhesion and performance
and use of coated nuts is not recommended when the coating thickness will be less than 0.00015 in for inch
series nuts and 4 µm for metric nuts. Coating thickness is applicable to significant surfaces only as defined
and measured in accordance with ASTM F 1941 and ASTM F 1941M as applicable. Unless designated by
the purchaser, any of the chromate finishes identified in the referenced ASTM documents may be supplied.
Designation A (Clear) for inch nuts and Designation B (Blue-bright) for metric nuts are recommended.
3.4.2 BLACK OXIDE COATINGS—Black oxide coatings shall be in accordance with SAE AMS 2485.
3.4.3 C OATINGS FOR T ITANIUM FAS TENERS—Fasteners of titanium alloy shall be anodized in accordance with SAE
AMS 2487 or AMS 2488, Type 2 (except testing requirements may be negotiated between manufacturer
and coating supplier). (See 3.4.7) for an additional coating often used for titanium nuts.
3.4.4 PASSIVATION —All corrosion-resistant steel fasteners shall be passivated in accordance with ASTM A 380.
Additional coatings are not necessary for corrosion protection of corrosion resistant steel fasteners but solid
dry film lubricants (see 3.4.7) may be added for lubricity.
3.4.5 ALUMINUM COATINGS—Aluminum plating of steel nuts shall be in accordance with MIL-DTL-83488. For
aluminum plated nuts, a nickel strike undercoating in accordance with SAE AMS-C-26074 is recommended.
Aluminum coating shall be anodized in accordance with ASTM B 580.
3.4.6 SILVER PLATING—Silver plating shall be in accordance with SAE AMS 2412.
3.4.7 SOLID D RY F ILM LUBRICANTS—Dry or solid film lubricants are used on fasteners to prevent corrosion and to
reduce installation friction. These coatings are recommended for use on titanium and corrosion resisting
steel fasteners to reduce friction and galling. Solid or dry film lubricants shall be in accordance with SAE
AS1701 Class 1 except that the dry film lubricant used for heat and corrosion resistant (HR) nuts shall be of
a class rated for 399 °C (750 °F) or higher.
3.4.8 ZINC/ALUMINUM OR CHRO MIUM /Z INC INO RG ANIC C O ATING—This coating shall meet the requirements of Grade
3 in accordance with ASTM F 1136 except that a pigmented topcoat is permitted. The basecoat shall have
a minimum thickness of 5.5 m. (If a particular pigmented topcoat color is required, see 4.6.2 for guidance.)
3.5 Quality Assurance—The ordering document must address quality assurance requirements. Many of the
ASTM standards have supplementary requirements that apply only when specified by the purchaser in the
contract or order. SAE J2280 Appendix A identifies additional test/inspection requirements that are to be
applied when SAE J2280 Appendix A is contractually invoked, such as for most military procurements. If the
ordering document does not address quality control requirements, the following inspections shall apply:
-6-
SAE J2485 Issued JAN2003
3.5.1 SURFACE DISCONTINUITIES—Non destructive inspection for surface discontinuities shall be in accordance with
ASTM F 812/F 812M MT or PT inspection. This requirement applies only to metric nuts 5 mm diameter and
larger and inch nuts of 1/4 in and larger diameter.
3.5.2 D IME NSIO NS—Dimensional inspections shall be in accordance with the referenced ASME dimensional
standard. Unless otherwise specified, the number of samples shall be in accordance with the ASME
dimensional standard. If the number of samples is not addressed in the dimensional standard, the
requirements of ASME B18.18.2M shall apply. For lots of 5000 pieces or less, Sample Size A of ASTM F
1470 may be applied for dimensional inspection.
3.5.3 STRENGTH AND MA TERIAL T ESTS AND D IMENSIONAL INSPECTIO NS —These tests and inspections shall be in
accordance with the applicable referenced ASTM fastener material standard unless the manufacturer utilizes
a quality assurance process that provides equivalent or better assurance.
3.5.4 C OATING THICKNESS—For coated fasteners, the coating thickness shall be verified by one of the methods
identified in ASTM F 1941 or F 1941M as applicable. The number of samples shall be as specified ASTM F
1941 or F 1941M as applicable.
4. Notes—This section contains information of a general or explanatory nature that may be helpful, but is not
mandatory.
4.1 Intended Use—This document establishes requirements and part or identifying numbers for selected
materials. While this document was developed specifically for ship systems and equipment, its use is not
restricted to these applications.
4.2 Identification of Part Numbering System on Drawings—On drawings where a column exists for identifying
the manufacturer or his Commercial and Government Entity (CAGE) Code, indicate the CAGE Code “81343/
J2485” or “SAE J2485” as required by the drawing standard. If no column exists or there is space only for the
5-digit CAGE Code, then a note must indicate that the part numbers are defined in SAE J2485.
4.3 Machine Screws—Part Numbers and requirements for machine screws are covered in SAE J2484.
4.4 Magnetic Permeability—For certain applications, low magnetic permeability may be required. Most non-
ferrous fasteners have a relative magnetic permeability in air of 2.0 maximum when determined in accordance
with ASTM A 342/A 342M on the finished fastener. However Nickel-Copper Alloy 400 and 405 fasteners
should not be used when a magnetic permeability of 2.0 maximum is required as the magnetic permeability
changes significantly at a transition temperature which is within the temperature range of normal usage. For
CRES fasteners, alloy 316/316L should be specified when low magnetic permeability is required. The relative
magnetic permeability should not exceed 2.0 maximum for alloy 316/316L alloy fasteners while similar CRES
fasteners of other 300 series alloy may exceed this value. If compliance with magnetic permeability
requirements is necessary, the requirements must be identified in addition to the part number for the screw.
4.4.1 Nickel-Copper alloys such as Alloy 400 can often be identified by their magnetic properties. The Curie point
will be between –5 °C and 100 °C depending upon the alloy. This means the material will be magnetic when
placed in a freezer and the magnetic properties will disappear when it is placed in hot water above the Curie
point.

4.5 Marking for Material Identification—Machine screw nuts are not normally marked for material identification
as most are low strength materials and of sizes for which the space for marking is limited. However, several of
the materials covered in this document have high strength and corrosion resistant properties and can not be
visually distinguished from more common machine screw nuts with less strength or corrosion resistance.
Therefore, it is recommended that procurement activities invoke marking requirements for nuts of the materials
listed below when the nuts are of sufficient size to permit marking. Marking of machine screw nuts of
diameters less than 10 mm (3/8 in) is not recommended. When these materials are required for hex
configurations of 6 mm (1/4 in) and larger diameters it is recommended that hex nuts in accordance with SAE
SAE J2295 be procured since SAE J2295 invokes marking requirements. Machine screw nuts made of
materials meeting the requirements of ASTM F 467 and F 467M may be marked in accordance with the
mechanical property marking identified in the applicable specification.
4.5.1 AUSTENITIC STAINLESS STE ELS—Two designators (S and S2) apply for austenitic stainless steel machine
screw nuts in Table 1 and have the same strength requirements. For a particular designator, any of the
materials listed can be provided. For the greatest corrosion resistance, designator S2 should be used. The
marking of screws with S2 materials is recommended when space permits. The recommended marking is:
316.
4.5.2 H EAT R ESISTA NT STEEL —For heat resistant steel, designator HR in Table 1 it is recommended that a material
identification marking be used when space permits. The recommended marking is: HR
4.5.3 N ICKE L ALLOYS—For Alloy 686, Designator BN in Table 1, it is recommended that a material identification
marking in accordance with ASTM F 467 or F 467M as applicable be used when space permits. If space is
limited, use “BN” and “MBN” for inch and metric nuts respectively.
4.6 Use of Coatings—Not all coatings are suitable for use on all materials. In addition to the following guidance,
SAE J2280 provides additional guidance on the use of specific coatings and the Appendix of SAE J2280
provides further restrictions regarding coatings for use on Navy ships.
4.6.1 U SE OF SILVER PLATING—Silver plating is primarily used as a thread lubricant to prevent galling and is not
usually used on machine screw nuts. Silver plating should only be specified for fasteners that are more
noble than silver such as Nickel-copper and nickel based alloys and some stainless steels. Silver shall not be
applied to titanium fasteners.
4.6.2 U SE OF ZINC /ALUMINUM OR CHRO MIUM /Z INC C OATINGS —If a pigmented topcoat of a particular color is desired
it must be specified in the ordering documentation. For metric fasteners, a blue pigmented topcoat is
recommended if color identificaiton is desired.
