These questions should act as a reading guide and are not intended to replace

1. Montag and Mildred think someone is at the door. Why doesn’t the
door-voicetell them if someone is there?
Because the thing that was behind the door was the mechanical hound.

She thinks that what’s behind the door is a dog, but it is the mechanical hound.

He’s referring to an instrument used by paramedics when Mildred got over those.

Faber considers himself a coward because he didn’t take action to prevent the
suppression of books.

Initially Faber is fearful and hesitant. He worries that Montag might be a trap or a

Mildred and her friends. He reads poetry to them, shocking and disturbing them.

Mrs. Bowles is emotionally disconnected from her children so that her parenting
style lack warmth and emotional investment.

38. How did the women vote? What did they use for criteria when
voting forpresident?
The woman voted is based on superficial criteria, such as appearance, rather than
discussing the candidate’s ideas. They focus on shallow aspects rather than
engaging in meaningful political discourse.

39. What does Montag do after he can’t take the women anymore?
After being unable to tolerate the shallow conversation and emotional emptiness of
the women, Montag reads poetry to them. He hopes to provoke thought and
challenge their complacency.
